Improve performance of Home Sharing in iTunes Apps
You can make iTunes Home Sharing work better by switching off the old unused method of sharing.

I'd been having lots of problems with connecting from my Apple TV and iPad/iPods to my iTunes library using Home Sharing. It turns out that Home Sharing is completely separate to the old sharing system in iTunes and the old version can be switched off. This has improved the performance a lot for me.

[crarko adds: I'm trying this, but it's too early for me to tell if there is any improvement or not. It certainly seems worth trying if you don't need the old style of sharing.]

How about a description of what the "old version of sharing is" or how the two are different for those folks who may not know what you are talking about?

As I said below, but more specifically:

Go to the Sharing section of iTunes' preferences, then disable the "Share my library on my local network" checkbox. That's the sharing method that is redundant if you're using Home Sharing (which is enabled/disabled via the Advanced menu).

I lost the ability to share my iTunes with my apple TV, MBP, and iPad a couple of months ago. Something is seriously screwed up. Can you please detail the 2 methods of iTunes sharing you're talking about. I've tried everything over the last couple of months. At this point I'm waiting for Lion to do a fresh install on a new HD.

thanks

It may be obvious to others, but, how do you turn off the old method? The hint doesn't state.

I don't have an iTunes app in front of me to be sure of the exact labels, but the "old" method is just the Sharing section of the iTunes preferences. Just turn off the "share my library" checkbox -- Home Sharing works by linking up with your AppleID, so doesn't require this bit to be on.

In iTunes 10.3 at least: Preferences -> Sharing -> "Share my library on my local network" should be unselected.

The "old" sharing is set up in iTunes Preferences, under the Sharing tab (checkmark by "Share my library on my local network").
The "new" sharing is set up in the "Advanced" menu in iTunes by selecting "Turn On Home Sharing". You'll be prompted for your iTunes Store account email, and the appropriate password. This enables the sharing between the computer running the iTunes library and various iOS devices.

Just tried this last night, 80gb of music being shared by a G4 Cube 450 with 768mb ram, shares the music out a lot faster than before, it is running 10.4.11 and itunes 9.2.1, everything else on the network is running the latest version of itunes, 10.3.1. Thanks OP

mousyak has it right for changes. This has changed the way I use itunes as I couldn't play shared video (tv, movie or podcast video files), just the audio came through. I resorted to (and it's still a useful hint outright - copy the itunes library and xml file from one computer itunes folder to another to 'mirror' everything, as it's simply referencing a common shared external drive for the library so the paths are the same). Now no need - video solid and faster. Just double click on the shared library to bring it up as a new standalone window. Obvious but not. The cat's pyjamas.

Sorry I did rush my original post. Hopefully this will fix that.

First of all here's Apple's own page explaining both normal sharing and home sharing in detail including the differences:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2688

To turn off normal sharing go to "Sharing" in Preferences and untick "Share my library on my local network".

So far the difference for me on my Apple TV has been huge. I used to have to wait forever to see my music collection and now it's instant.

Excellent hint! This has really helped with occasional dropouts. I had originally failed to grasp that "sharing" and "home-sharing" were completely independent services, and the only reason to run both is if you serve your music to computers on your local network but not included in the five you can designate as home-sharing on your iTunes account.
