Getting Pages to cooperate with the keyboard page up and page down buttons Apps
For some strange reason, the page up and page down buttons on my keyboard never cooperated with Pages. What I wanted to be able to do was to simply hit those keys on the keyboard, and have Pages scroll up or down to the next page.

You'd think it would do that, but it doesn't. It would always scroll a little more or a little less than a page. Quite maddening. There is a little blue scroll triangle at the bottom of the page that can be clicked to do that, but I wanted to do it with the keyboard.

The macro editor QuicKeys was my solution. I was able to write a simple macro to click that button, and assign the action to the key.

The details:
  • Create a new shortcut in QuicKeys.
  • The action is to 'press button.' The location of the button is specified by the number of pixels relative to a defined location; in this case, the left lower corner of the Pages window. On my monitor it was 357 pixels horizontal by -7 pixels vertical, for the page down click, and 339 horizontal by -7 for the page up.

[crarko adds: I thought one might be able to assign keys in Pages using System Preferences » Keyboard » Keyboard Shortcuts » Application Shortcuts. To my surprise, Pages (and Keynote and Numbers) did not show up in the list of applications I could choose to assign a keyboard shortcut to. I could add it using 'Other.' Is this because the iWork suite is installed by default into a subfolder in /Applications?]

Getting Pages to cooperate with the keyboard page up and page down buttons

For giggles I decided to try this out with Keyboard Maestro (I don't use Pages for text documents, so I've never had issue with the PgUp/Down buttons). Keyboard Maestro costs almost half of what QuicKeys costs ($36 vs $59.95).

Pretty much the same. I was able to create 2 macros, one for Pg Up and one for Pg Down. My coordinates were slightly different is all:

Pg Down: Lower-left corner offsets: 491, -6
Pg Up: Lower-left corner offsets: 481, -6

I usually have the "Page Thumbnails" view turned on, though. If I even turn this off or change the side panel size, I'd have to re-program the macros. ;-(

Still, a nice hint. And now I know Keyboard Maestro lets me do mouse manipulations as well. ;-)

You can obtain the same functionality using the donationware Spark shortcut tool.

Just add a shortcut for Pages that triggers the following Applescript:
activate application "Pages"
tell application "System Events"
   try
      tell process "Pages"
         repeat with thewin in windows
if subrole of thewin is "AXStandardWindow" then
click button 1 of scroll area 1 of splitter group 1 of thewin
               exit repeat
            end if
          end repeat
      end tell
   end try
end tell
this is the code for page down, replace button 1 with button 2 for page up.
The strange repeat loop is needed because applescript detects also floating windows, and they are detected before regolar ones; so, as we cannot know how may palettes (inspector, font, colors, etc.) are open, the script browses all the windows till it finds the first one that is a regular one (it will be the frontmost open document).
Hope this helps.

Pages (and Keynote and Numbers) did not show up in the list of applications I could choose
Strangely enough, Pages does show up in the list on my 10.6.6 system, but Keynote and Numbers do not. I haven't moved the applications since installing them. So the subfolder theory doesn't seem to hold up, but something is weird.

On my machine, the page up and down keys work in Pages as they're supposed to. I'm using Pages '08 and Mac OS X 10.6.6 on a Mac Pro 3,1.

Yes, but the hint author wants a page-up/down function that scrolls the page at the exact beginning of the previous/next page of the document (the same behaviour of the up/down icons in the bottom bar of the window).
This is a little different from the normal behaviour of the page-up/down keys.
