Collect movies with a Smart Album in iPhoto '11 Apps
This is an update to this previous hint about creating a smart album that gathers all of your video files that are stored in iPhoto.

In previous versions of iPhoto, the user had to create a condition for each type of movie file that might possibly exist in the library (.mov, .avi, etc.).

The latest version of iPhoto can find all movie files for you, without having to add each extension, but the specific rule is not obvious.

When you create a new Smart Album the condition is actually found under the 'Photos' header. Chose Photos from the first drop down box and in the next two boxes you can choose 'is - Movie.'

iPhoto will gather together all of your movie files stored in iPhoto, regardless of their extension.

[crarko adds: I tested this, and it works as described. You can also do a search in the iPhoto Search box by Keyword = 'Movie' and that will find them although it doesn't create the Smart Album.]

Collect movies with a Smart Album in iPhoto '11

I am pretty sure that any "movie" that was directly imported by iPhoto from the few versions has always added the keyword "movie" NOT ALL and I have been doing this for years ie. smart album with keyword "movie". It is however useful to add some Filename rules to smart album to find avi, 3gp, mov, mp4, m4v etc. as really old iPhoto libraries (like mine) will not have a the keyword added as older versions of iphoto did not add this keyword and i am pretty sure that upgrading a iphoto database does not add the keyword for all file types especially old ones ;-)

I cant test this as I have a modern library which has imported movies and added keyword. I do not have my 2003-2005 and 2006-2008 Library with me as on "holiday" which has a ton of old formats in it.

PS. This was a hint that i submitted from back in the day when i was called savage ;-)

This works in iPhoto '09; it lists the keyword "Movie" when "Photo" is the choice in the first field.
