10.6: Using the Purchases Tab in Mac App Store System 10.6
Snow Leopard only hintWhile looking through the App Store, I stumbled upon something useful about the Purchases tab. If you use the same Apple ID across two or more computers, you may logically want apps purchased with the same Apple IDs installed on those computers as well. You can do this.

Select the Purchases tab in the App Store. You have a complete list of every app you have purchased using the current account. If there are apps you've downloaded on one computer that you'd like on another computer, simply click Install and it will download on that computer.

Simple, yes, but it took me a while to discover this. It comes in handy often.

[crarko adds: This is one feature of the Mac App Store that I really do like. Along with the effective Family license scheme it implements, since I have five systems to maintain.]

Wow, that makes Pixelmator even better value!

Interestingly, it doesn't work with iPhoto. I wonder if all developers can decide whether or not to implement the multi-computer licence, or just Apple? The App store help suggests it should be possible with ALL apps.

It does mention one other way to get multiple copies:

"- Copy the application from one Mac to another Mac. When you open the copied application on the other Mac, enter the Apple ID used to purchase it."

I'll give that a try.

It worked! I copied iPhoto to my other Mac, and it opened without even asking for account details (I was already logged in in the App store), so it's just the ability to re-download that's missing for some apps, as per the T's and C's:

"Solely as an accommodation to you, you may re-download certain Products for use in accordance with the Usage Rules. Not all Products are eligible for this accommodation or may be available at any given time."

I missed that part of the T&C. Must've been reading too fast.

Ok, stupid question of the day... where's this "purchases" tab? I'm in iTunes, hit Apps... I see icons for all the apps I've purchased. But I don't see an install option. If (in iTunes) I hit "iTunes store", I can get to the App Store section. But no "purchases" tab to be seen anywhere.

This is the *Mac* app store. It's in the Dock, unless you have 10.6.5 or under.
