iOS Text selection tips iOS devices
Yesterday I found some shortcuts to text selection while using the notes application in the iPhone (iOS 4.2.1).

If you make a two fingers swipe on a paragraph, it is selected (the easiest way I've found is to make a swipe down just on the paragraph).

In the same way, if you pinch out (like when zooming in a photo) a wider selection is automatically started and you have 'control' over both the beginning and the end of the selection.

[crarko adds: I still find text editing in iOS to be something of a black art. It's the main reason I have not attempted to edit this site using my iPad. It's still just too inefficient compared to doing it on the Mac, even if that means bringing the Mac along when I travel.]

That is sooooo much better than quadruple tap for paragraph selection. Thanks for the tip!

I couldn't get these shortcuts to work on my iPhone 3GS running 4.2.1 in Mail or Notes. One thing I've been using which does work really well, is the fact that when you're moving the end handles they have "inertia". If you release your finger from the screen while moving a handle it'll coast to a stop at a sensible boundary, usually the end of a word or paragraph.

Can't you just do a two-finger tap on a paragraph to select it?

Yeah, seems like this is just interpreted the same way as a two-finger tap.

I also discovered double-tapping and dragging works to select a range of words (just as on the Mac), which is a bit faster than the tap-hold-adjust method I had been using before

I agree with joecab. A two-finger tap is easier and more sure-fire.

Incidentally, this seems to be peculiar to Notes; I couldn't replicate it in Pages.
