10.6: Unknown file extensions search App Store System 10.6
Snow Leopard only hintIt may seem obvious, but if you have an unknown file extension and try to open the file, you will now be presented with an option to search the App Store to locate an application. I realized this when I tried to open a kdb (a keypass database file) and was presented with this new option.

[crarko adds: This is obviously only available in 10.6.6 and later. Just for fun, I looked to see if Spotlight would search the Mac App Store. It doesn't, yet, but I won't be at all surprised to see that integrated in 10.7.]

Reminds me of Windows. "Use the Web service to search the Web for this file extension."

Hopefully, as with Windows, you can disable this irritation. Though I have not yet upgraded to 10.6.6, I expect great annoyance and look forward to the hint to disable it. FWIW, you can disable the worthless Windows web service prompt with:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system]
"NoInternetOpenWith"=dword:00000001

I realize that this site is not about Windows tips, but that's actually a great one! That Windows prompt annoys me to no end - especially since choosing to use the web service is never useful when I actually need it because I don't already know what type of extension I'm dealing with! This Mac version may actually be useful though. And if not, I'm sure there is a way to turn it off.

I seem to remember Steve Jobs announcing this feature when he previewed Lion.
