Create a Smart Folder to cull photos without Place info in iPhoto '11 Apps
Many of you probably know that you can create a Smart Folder in iPhoto to cull all of your photos that contain unidentified people. The condition for this Smart Folder is: 'Face' + 'is' + 'unnamed.'

This is a handy way to find and label these photos.

Unfortunately there does not seem to be an obvious set of conditions for a Smart Folder to cull photos lacking an assigned location.

Try the following Smart Folder conditions: 'Place' + 'does not contain,' and for the third field, leave it blank (with no spaces).

Every picture that's culled into the resulting Smart Folder should be ones that lack Place info.

If you assign a location to one of the photos, it should then vanish from the Smart Folder.

[crarko adds: I tested this, and it works as described.]

A Better Way

A better way to do this is:

Photo - is not - Tagged with GPS

I also added a keyword for photos that don't have a place, so I can add it to photos I don't want to show up in my smart album of photos to be geotagged.

Not necessarily A Better Way

I have numerous photos in my database that have no geodata. In fact I am in the middle of importing scans of slides taken in the '60's long before GPS existed. This would be a mess unless you add another condition (a date threshold, event name, or tag them) to mark them as something that should be excluded. This may be an acceptable solution for iPhone pix or photos which have geodata added via embedded GPS or external GPS. At best the is alternate way of handling this - certainly not a better way. Cheers.

The end result of the two methods would be exactly the same, correct? Or does the latter only exclude ones that were tagged using a GPS device (not manually tagged)?

This is a nitpicking comment, but I thought 'cull' meant kill or get rid of. Unless things have changed since my version of iPhoto you can't actually delete photos from the library via selecting them in a smart folder. I think the hint means to say 'collect' or 'amass', or maybe 'corral'?

That's one of the definitions. However it primarily means:

: to select from a group : choose <culled the best passages from the poet's work> - Merriam-Webster

Origin:
130050; ME coilen, cuilen, cullen < AF, OF cuillir < L colligere to gather; see collect
