Mail.app's proxy icon: Link to a specific message Apps
There are quite a few things you can do with the little proxy icon in the window title bar, as mentioned in this hint.

Here is another one.

When you drag the little proxy icon of a Apple Mail message window to the desktop or any Finder window, you get an 'Internet location file' (.inetloc) which points to your message.

[crarko adds: I tested this, and it works as described. As indicated in the older hint, this behavior is exhibited in a number of applications, including Safari, which has also been hinted previously.]

I'm being thick here, but what icon? I can't see any icon at all in the title bar of any app/window?

Safari's proxy icon is the favicon in the location field.

You have to double click the message and open it in a new window. It doesn't appear in the message viewer.
