print SMS messages from iPhone iOS devices
Need to print SMS messages from your phone? My wife needed evidence for a dispute and it was all in SMS on her phone. After searching the web and getting frustrated with the poor programs and lack of something that works, I chanced upon a workaround.

When viewing the SMS messages, hit edit. You then have the opportunity to select whatever messages are needed. Forward these to your email or wherever you wish. You then have a text transcript in the body of an email that you can cut/copy/paste into Pages/Word/etc. for printing.

[crarko adds: Some other options are copy/paste the text of a message into an AirPrint enabled app on the device or using a program like PhoneView to copy the SMS messages off the device. Perhaps as Apple gets its AirPrint act together it will be enabled in all the bundled apps in some future update.]

I am in an ongoing court dispute and what I do is a take the text message and screen capture them by pressing the power key and the home key at the same time. This puts the image of the text message into your camera roll in photos. Then just share them and email them to yourself.

One thing about Phoneview--I love the program and the developer is awesome, however, due to a peculiarity to how timestamps on SMS messages work, it does get SMS messages out of order from time to time. The developer wrote a patch just for me to try to fix this, but even with all he could do, he couldn't fix them because of the actual timestamps on the messages--so beware!

The iTunes program also backs up your text messages when you sync your iPhone. To access your messages through your backup, sync your iPhone to iTunes on your computer.

Enter "C:\Users\XXXX\AppData\Roaming" on the address line, replace XXXX with your Windows username and press "Enter." Look for a file with an ".mdbackup" or ".mddata" extension. But you cannot read it. you need a backup extrator app, there are many iPhone backup extractor out there, like iStonsoft, iPubsoft,Coolmuster, and more...

iStonsoft iPad/iPhone/iPod data recovery:

Vibosoft iPhone backup extractor:

iPubsoft iPhone sms extractor:

Coolmuster iPhone/iPad/iPod backup extractor:

all of them works, but not free!

An alternative is to take one or more screen shots (press both buttons simultaneously).

Or you can just extract them from the sqlite database they are stored/backed up in on your computer. Look at

~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/[unique string]/3d0d7e5fb2ce288813306e4d4636395e047a3d28.mddata

But, at the end of the day, isn't any of the suggested methods more work than it is worth compared to just manually write a few sms:es down in whatever format you want them in?

I'd use a third party utility to back up your iPhone SMS text messages to your computer in text form or in HTML format by using the following:

Next, just print the HTML file containing your SMS text message from your computer.
