Fix response speed in Image Capture Apps
For a while now, I'd noticed Image Capture would launch when connecting a card reader (as it should), but would take a very long time before the card reader would show up as a device and display images ready for download.

It didn't make any difference to try selecting iPhoto or Aperture to open instead of Image Capture.

The only thing I had done recently, was to setup three mobile phones as Bluetooth devices, and I noticed these devices were showing up in the shared devices pane of Image Capture.

Normally, the phones would not be available, but noticed when they were shown as available, Image Capture would work normally. So, it was obvious that Image Capture is looking for shared devices and waiting for some timeout period before accessing the card reader.

This workaround solved the problem totally:

Navigate to: /System/Library/Image Capture/Devices in the Finder. Inside this folder are several plugins, note the one called 'Bluetooth Camera.' Drag this module out to the desktop, and keep for future re-install should you need to.

This stops Image Capture looking for Bluetooth devices upon launch, and solves the sluggishness problem. I can still use Bluetooth File Exchange to access anything on my mobiles.

Should you ever need to re-install the Bluetooth Camera module, take care to set the correct file permissions for the plugin, just copy the permissions from another plugin.

[crarko adds: I haven't tested this one. Bluetooth seems to cause a lot of delays polling for devices if they are not readily available. I just turn it off unless I need it. The correct permissions for those plugins are 755, for system, wheel, and everyone, respectively.]

Having Bluetooth deactivated does the trick, but the caveat is if you have a Bluetooth mouse or keyboard. Ideally Image capture should have a button to "Scan Bluetooth devices" or something like that, but deleting the plugin works fine.
