Moving Outlook info to Address Book and iCal

I searched for too long to figure out how to best move Microsoft Outlook data (Contacts and Calendars) to a Mac (Address Book and iCal).
The export options provided by Microsoft Outlook 2003 are atrocious. (Not sure about 2007 or 2010.)
But, with Apple's iTunes and an iPhone/iPod touch, it's quite easy.
- Attach iPhone to Windows PC with Outlook data and launch iTunes.
- Tell iTunes to sync Contacts, Calendars from Outlook.
- Press the Sync button.
- Attach the iPhone to your Mac and launch iTunes.
- Ignore the 'This device is sync'd with another iTunes Library' warning and tell iTunes to sync Contacts and Calendars.
- Sync and tell it to 'Merge' the information.
[crarko adds: I've done transfers like this before; obviously be careful about auto-syncing Music and other media to a different library and wiping those off your iOS device. There are options like libpst or using Thunderbird as an intermediary that may be attempted as well.]
