I fondly recall the days of classic Mac OS application development using Apple's programming environment called Macintosh Programmer's Workshop (MPW). It had an unusual design in that the command shell and the text editor were built into the same Worksheet window.

There is a free editor called Eddie available that has the flavor of this type of environment, although obviously not with all the features of MPW. It was originally written for BeOS and ported to the Mac. It supports Objective C syntax along with several other languages, as well as source control systems and XCode project integration. Here is the feature set. Eddie is also available for Linux, running under the Gnome environment.

It's another addition to the crop of programmer's editors, along with XCode itself, BBEdit, TextMate, TextWrangler and others.
