Keyboard shortcuts for Safari Reader Web Browsers
Safari Reader is a new feature with Safari 5. There are several keyboard shortcuts you can use to bring up, navigate and close Reader.

When you see the Reader icon in the address bar, you can use the following keyboard shortcuts:
  • Command+Shift+R to enter Reader mode
  • Arrow keys up and down to navigate page
  • Spacebar or Page Down to page forward
  • Shift+Spacebar or Page Up to page back
  • Home (or Command+Up arrow) to go to the top of the page
  • End (or Command+Down arrow) to go to the end
  • Escape to dismiss Reader

All but the first and last are plain, normal Safari shortcuts to navigate ANY page!

A notable admission from the list which I find are my most used shortcuts in Google Reader.

'j' - New article
'k' - Previous article

Browsing down by page is fine for reading but for blasting through lots of posts to find ones you want to read you can't beat, in my opinion, j+k

The hint is talking about the article reader feature in Safari 5, not Google Reader.

I don't know why this was submitted as a hint though. These keyboard commands (except entering/leaving reader) apply to any webpage viewed in Safari.

Can we have a poll for worst hints of 2010 in December? This should be on the list.

Can we have a poll for worst hints of 2010 in December?

If right after the poll we can have nominations for the biggest whiners and crybabies. Which Prima Dona died and left you guys her tiara?

Honestly, not everyone who stops by Mac OS X Hints is an expert level user. Tons of people buy their 1st Mac every day and these hints help newer folks. If you are not interested in a subject then move on to something that does interest you.

Personally I appreciate the effort people go to to submit hints or useful, relevant comments. Even if they are well known to some people, they won't be known to everyone.

"Honestly, not everyone who stops by Mac OS X Hints is an expert level user."

Then maybe they should start with an instruction manual.

I'll be content if people just start behaving like adults.

I agree with capacity and David Allen. Just because I happen to know everything in this hint, it doesn't mean I should complain about it. If I don't like it, I'll vote with my feet… erm, fingers… um, eyes…

Hi guys,
I'd actually like to know how to get rid of some of these shortcuts.
My problems are especially with the space bar and the backspace key. They shouldn't work in text boxes but they do. In the middle of filling out forms I press space and can't see what I'm typing because the page moves down, or even worse press backspace to delete a letter and lose all the data I had previously types because it goes back a page.
Is there something wrong with my system or would it be better to change these shortcuts (if so, how)
-Maybe this should be a separate tip - sorry if its a bit off topic
thanks

Don't forget that 'Command +' and 'Command -' will increase or decrease text size; super nice when using Reader to kick way back and read articles from an improper distance. (;
