Opening new Illustrator files in an older version

Even though the new Adobe CS5 graphics/design suite is out, a lot of us haven't updated yet to the new version. But of course some clients are shipping their new logo in EPS or Illustrator format created with the new version. And if you still have only the older (CS4) version of Illustrator you can't open them. Here is a workaround for that.

I'm still using CS3 and in order to get backwards compatibility with this version for the logo image's format, the client would have to save it back to CS4, then open it in CS4 and save it back to the CS3 format (assuming they have all three versions installed, which is unlikely).

The simpler way is to place the EPS document into your current version of inDesign and then create a PDF from it. And then you can open the PDF in your version of Illustrator.

This is how I usually get the client's logos. I go to their website and download a version of their Annual Report and much of the time whoever created the report will have the logo saved as an EPS image embedded within the PDF.

[crarko adds: I haven't tested this one.]
