Tab auto-completion in Finder's Go menu Desktop
To use Tab auto-completion in Finder's 'Go to Folder...' dialog:

When manually entering a path in Finder's 'Go to Folder' dialog (located under the Go menu), pressing Tab will auto-complete the folder name if you have entered enough information to make the choice unambiguous. For instance, entering /e and pressing Tab will auto-complete to /etc/ (assuming you have no other folders beginning with "e" in the filesystem root. This is the same behavior that is seen in Terminal.

[crarko adds: I tested this, and it works as described.]

It's always had auto-completion, but the ability to use tab is new, I think. So is the fact that it is case insensitive, which is very nice.

Actually, I just used a 10.3 machine and it turns out that the use of tab always was present. I guess I just never tried it (probably because of the way it always completes instead of when there is just one match, as another commenter pointed out).

Anyway, I've been using open PATH in the terminal for some time, which has proper tab completion.

im slightly perplexed. it autocompletes before you get the chance to press tab. so surely using tab is superfluous?

It does not auto complete for me (10.6.4), but it does show my last entry, are you sure it auto-auto completes for you?

What I see after taking a second look is that it will auto-complete on its own after a brief interval, but if you use the Tab key method it happens right away.

Yeah, this is rather old news, but very useful. Unfortunately, it's kind of a sloppy tab auto-completion, in that it returns the first thing it finds, without any other options. So you need to be rather particular with how much you enter - I'm used to being a bit lazier on the command line.

This also works on the Go to… box in open/save dialogs.

And, also useful (perhaps a hint in and of itself) in open/save dialogs, entering '/' or '~' in the filename textbox will pop up the Go to… box automatically (starting you off with '/' or '~'). Useful because it makes going to a specific path just that much less mindful…

Let's give credit where credit is due when rehashing old material:
