HP all in one now can scan Printers
I was having problems with my HP PSC 2110 all-in-one printer and in the process of troubleshooting was tinkering with the System Preferences for it. I just randomly clicked on the Scan button and the clicked Open Scanner. Up popped a scan window with 'Scanner is warming up.' Then it showed a preview window and a Scan button. I was completely blown away. I have been trying to get this scanner to work with Leopard and Snow Leopard for years.

This was after applying the most recent HP Printer Drivers v.2.4.1 for Mac OS X v10.6 update, so that is likely the fix.

[crarko adds: I haven't tested this one. It's nice to see the functionality returned to multi-function printers, even if it takes quite a while to happen. Remember to try the latest driver updates when they come out.]

I'll stick with VueScan, thanks. That's been working for me from Leopard days on my HP 2200's. Developer is constantly updating and is very responsive to problems, suggestions, etc. It's not cheap but it's definitely worth it, especially if you'd rather not rely on HP for anything.

My Laserjet 3390 isn't even supported with Vuescan!

The scan function for HP all-in-ones was added when Snow Leopard came out. You can access it at any time from the Image Capture utility.

Hopefully we'll be able to access the printer's card reader in the future, like we did back under Tiger.

This is been working for some time with my HP all-in-one. I use the Preview application to import from mine.

I, too, noticed this right after the upgrade to Snow Leopard. Same printer. HP's fickle functionality within OS X has been a bane for a long time.

According to Apple's list, none of HP's LaserJet multi-function printers supports scanning still. I recently checked the HP site and found the same. Even a current model which HP have specifically promised scanning support for still has not had a suitable driver issued. I have for years recommended HP because historically they have done a better job of providing Mac drivers than most other manufacturers, but based on this I would have to blacklist HP printers.

I think it's just great that Apple is including printer drivers in Software Update now. You can get fixes like this that you were never expecting or consciously looking for.

I had exactly this difficulty and solved it in the same way. I therefore endorse your solution.

With all printers, you can set up and solve problems via Preferences/Printers/Highlight Printer Name/Open Scanner

Good luck.

You can scan with any scanner direct from Preview .. File>Import from Scanner

I thought I'd lost the use of my HP PSC1000 series, but this works just fine!

Ha - I had a similar problem.. With the release of 10.6.4 many goodies appeared. Now I can use an "old" printer on our network... and also, with this release, I was suddenly able to connect to windows 2000 smb share, which previously was not working. With each release, you have to keep checking those things that didn't work.

I have tried downloading the suggested driver, I have used the preview function, I have even tried to select manually, but my 3390 still does not work. I am regretting my update to 10.6.4! I do quite a bit of scanning, therefore it is truly disappointing for the scanner not to work.

Any suggestions out there??
