Use the original iPhone dock with New iPhone 4 iOS devices
If you have an original iPhone (the Edge only one), it came with a dock. This dock fits the new iPhone 4 and still charges it and seems to hold it pretty nicely. So if you were looking at buying the new dock and still have one of these older ones around, try it out first.

[crarko adds: I haven't tested this one. Given the difference in thickness between the two units this is a lucky find.]

Awesome! Have one somewhere. I was going to throw it away, but could not bring myself to do that. Glad I didn't.

I still use an original Dock, Copyright 2003. I placed all my devices in there: iPod 40GB (Firewire), iPod 60GB (USB), iPod Touch 1G, iPod Touch 2G and now iPhone 4.

All of them work well in it.

HOWEVER: The iPhone 4 displays, only for a few seconds, a message that this dock was not made for the use with iPhone.

Go figure.

Really? I upgraded to the iPhone 4 from an original iPhone 2G, and I wasn't able to make the new phone sit properly in the 2G's dock.

I've also got the bigger dock from my first iPod (the old 40gb "touchwheel" version), and both phones -- and for that matter all the more modern dock-connector devices -- seem to fit fine in it, albeit with the occasional "this device is not compatible" messages.

It's amazing what you can make fit where if you use a dremel tool. All my original docs have been modified to fit my 3gs...

Nothing a little epoxy and re-grinding can't fix. :P

I have the original iPhone Dock and tried this out. It does work with the iPhone4. Saves about $30 for a new dock. Now I just need more usb ports :-).

Until last Thursday I was still using a 1st-generation iPhone. One of the first things I did with my iPhone 4 was put it in my old dock to transfer apps and music. They are obviously not made for each other, but the fit is surprisingly good.

It does work, and doesn't hold the phone quite as nicely as the 4G dock. The 1G dock relies on the foxconn connector to hold up the phone. There is space around the phone in the 1G dock, but not enough to use the dock with a bumper, so thata's still a no-go.

There's a market out there for inserts to the universal dock for an Apple bumper clad iPhone4.

The audio out jack on the back did not work. I did not try any video out. It will sync and charge the iPhone 4 and is great for FaceTime as a stand. It works well with the speakerphone too.

I just tried this hint. The iPhone 4 does indeed fit, and the USB connection seems fine. But as BrentT pointed out, the dock's audio-out port does *not* work.

I sold my Original iPhone when I bought the iPhone 4. I had three docks that I sold with it. Just yesterday, I found a fourth in a box full of office crap (don't ask me why I had so many :P ) Anyway, I was going to just sell it on eBay and try to make a few bucks off of it. While searching the WWW for the part number, I came across this thread. HOLY CRAP! It really does work! I had already purchased the iPhone 4 dock to keep on my desk at work. Now I can keep this original iPhone dock at home.

When testing it for the first time, like "xcgr" and "BrentT", the audio out did not work with my iPhone 4 docked. Since other people had experienced that same issue, I just figured that portion of the dock was not compatible. However, when I plugged my iPhone 4 dock back in and tried to listen to music on my iPhone 4, there was no sound coming out!! For a split second, I freaked, thinking the original iPhone dock had messed up something with my iPhone 4. But then I checked the volume controls on my computer and found that the "Line In" had been muted. It wasn't muted before I connected the original iPhone dock because I had been listening to my iPhone 4 through the computer earlier that day. So after I unchecked the "Mute" box, the "LINE OUT" on the original iPhone dock was working after all!!!

So, in a nut shell, I believe plugging in the original iPhone dock and docking the iPhone 4 into it caused the "Line In" to get muted... don't ask me how or why. But once I un-muted it, the original iPhone dock played the tunes on my iPhone 4 perfectly!!!
