Opt out of some iAd data collection iOS devices
I was interested to know if I could disable iAds in iOS 4 and found a related Apple support article.

By going to this site in your mobile browser you can opt out of interest-based ads, i.e. ads which gather analytics about your interests and what iAds you've watched. This does not opt out of the ads, but restricts some of the information that is gathered from them.

You need an iOS 4 device to do this (they're the only ones that get iAds anyway) and you'll need to repeat the process on each device.

[crarko adds: I haven't tested this one, although I did try it with my Mac and got an error that it wasn't running iOS 4. It's not clear if visiting the site a second time with the same device would reverse the process and opt you back in. I believe iAds are scheduled to launch July 1st.]

Opt out of some iAd data collection

I have had some mixed results with this.

Taking a look at this image (http://imgur.com/6N5sA.png) you can see I am running iOS 4.0 on a 3Gs (because of the locked orientation) and it keeps saying that the opt out was unsuccessful and / or could not be completed at this time.

Yesterday when I was running the GM 4.0, it said "iOS 4.0 is not running on this device" and that is what made me do a full restore to the public 4.0 release.

I do not think you will be able to successfully opt out until the iAds go public on the 1st of July. Anyone else with any different result?

Turns out, this doesn't seem to work on 3G models running iOS4. Maybe iAd isn't supported on 3G? Suddenly, being out of date is fashionable.

The opt out clearly does not run on my iOS-4-installed iPod touch 2-Gen. I attempted to opt out a dozen times last night from Apple's own link and three times this morning. Every time the result was the same, an "Unsuccessful Opt Out" page claiming my device was "not running iOS4."

To add insult to injury, the webpage isn't even optimized for iPhones & iPod touches. The type is almost unreadably tiny at full-screen and requires horizontal scrolling when large enough to read. You'd think Apple would make mobile-ready a page that'll mostly be read by people on mobile devices.

This is so bogus of Apple. I pay them for a tool and as a result they dump ads on me or will in the near future. The opt out thing is just a bad joke and has been a major time waster. I have been trying for hours Š la their "wait a few hours and try again" instruction. And adding insult to injury, as pointed out above, the d@mn page isn't even mobile formatted. Apple, I want you to know I think this is crap and a cheesy cash grab to boot. Isn't Apple making enough money these days? They are turning into a bunch of greed-whores. I'm thinking of looking into installing Android on this iPhone!!

Troll harder: Iím sure that youíll have good fortune escaping advertising with Android, the operating system brought to you by the biggest advertising firm on the internet.

Opt out works after full restore.

Not so much trolling as being naive. I've learned some since.

I finally got the opt out to be successful after doing a full restore on top of the iOS4 update. Got the tip from some folk on ehmac.ca.

Visiting it a second time does not opt you back in.

It appears that there's no mechanism for opting in once you've opted out.

How does one opt-out of the data collection? The document this article points to talks about how to opt-out of the ads based on the data collection, but not about opting out of the data collection itself. Is there even a way?
