Please avoid this drag-and-drop nightmare of selecting the top five topics...

It took me about as much time to answer this question than all the other ones :(

The fourth page of the survey requires drag & drop, which doesn't work on my iPad.

Sorry, I won't do this survey because I am not allowed to leave questions unanswered if I choose to.

I started the survey, but stopped after a few screens. The design is kind of clumsy. For example, I'm not sure how to answer the Website Visitation page. I read many of those sites through Google Reader. For some I've never gone to the actual site. Plus, the columns are so far apart it is a little difficult to tell which site I am rating. I missed one site and got an error when I tried to move to the next page. The error message told me I missed a site, but it did not tell me which one. The widespread columns made it hard to find the blank row.

The Top Five Topics page is just annoying. Dragging and dropping is not an awful way to handle it if everything fit on one screen. I refuse to deal with it if I have to scroll up and down while moving topics. It would be a lot easier to rank the topics if I could see them all at one time. The topics have a lot of wasted space.

I'm happy to help you figure out your demographics as long as the survey itself is not too aggravating. This one had too many usability problems for me.

Was it just me, or was the selection of web sites rather thin? There are many tech-related web sites I visit on a regular basis, several daily, but the form makes me look like a web-avoider!

I will make sure this feedback is available to the designers of the survey.

Thanks!

It's ironic that the survey itself seems to be lousy, making it useless for its intended purpose---finding out thoughts about MacOSXHints...

Top five topics my hairy yellow butt
Authored by: CaptDeuce on Jun 16, '10 09:35:02AM

I don't visit OS X Hints on a daily basis for TOPICS. I read what's useful or interesting and bookmark what will be useful in the future. I couldn't skip the question so I skipped the survey.

And the websites I visit? I'm sorry, there's a HUGE frequency between "a few times a month" and "NEVER". The entire survey assumes a web surfing pattern I don't use. Plonk.

It would have been useful to mention up front that this survey is only interested in people in the US.

I know exactly how many US employees my company has, zero. Except that wasn't an available option.

Indeed. (In fact, I believe my employer does have some US employees, but very few -- less than in each of many other countries.)

And if I'm supposed to convert my salary into US dollars, it could at least provide some exchange rates! I really couldn't be bothered going and looking them up.

Still, I guess we must both be figments of someone's imagination. After all, EVERYONE knows that the USA is the only REAL country...

I would like to second the previous comments and ask whether anyone from Macosxhints actually did the survey before posting it. Having had some involvement with online surveys before I seriously doubt whether you will gain any useful information from this as the questions are not well defined or are unable to be answered by many users and the design is so bad that many users will give up before completing as some have already stated in previous comments.

I also work for an organisation with several thousand employees none of whom work in the US. (Does the spelling give it away?)

I've not commented on this site before even though I have visited this site daily for years so it is ironic that a survey should actually inspire me to begin.

The drag n drop is too much of a pain scrolling all the way up with a drag, so I bailed.

How ironic that the first question that mentions an iPad, cannot be answered on an iPad.

Those drag and drop questions obviously haven't been tested in anything other than desktop browsers.

So, sorry, I couldn't even complete the survey.

I did complete the survey. Many questions have little to do with MacOSXHints, are impossible to answer truthfully, or seem directed to US public only. At the the end you are taken "back" to Macworld (a site I never visit). How can this clumsy and annoying survey be of help to "make MacOSXHints better"?

Very poorly constructed survey
Authored by: lionel77 on Jun 16, '10 05:45:13PM

I, too, only made it halfway through before I became too annoyed to continue.

The questionnaire is very, very poorly constructed. Some questions don't include the most obvious options. For instance, the "reason for visiting the website" question only lists "Looking for a solution to a problem", "Sharing your knowledge", and "Visiting the forums" as explicit options, but doesn't include an option for people who just visit the page regularly to catch up on the most recent hints (which I would think is one of the biggest if not the biggest group of people).

The five favorite topic page is just plain awful, as others have already pointed out. At that point I realized that the survey was not about improving the page, but about collecting information for advertisers. I don't have an issue with that per se, but if the execution is that terrible, I do not feel compelled to complete the survey.

I love macosxhints and I visit the page daily, but the next time you want to run such a survey, please ask if you can see the questions in advance, so you can do some damage control. ;)

Please fix this awful survey. I gave up on the drag&drop nightmare page. It's unnecessarily spaced out, uses drag & drop, and dropping doesn't always work. You must have lost 90% of people on that page. I might try again if you fix it.

This is a great site but the survey doesn't work on an iPhone--the drag-and-drop question, and can't bypass it. Ironic given the tech savvy owners and users of this site.

terrible survey
Authored by: SOX on Jun 17, '10 05:36:07AM

I stopped with it after the 4rth question asked me why I was visiting macosxhints and none of the check boxes included the obvious "to read the damn hints". What's with not being able to skip irritating questions about gender.

some marketing troll unfamiliar with your site made this up.

I think they want to know why beyond just reading the hints. Otherwise, that's what the "other" is for.

The drag and drop page is a total usability nightmare.

And, it's kind of funny that a survey from Macworld (note the "world" word in there) does not take into account that some companies do not employ US citizens. Seriously, you have to remember that you're not alone in the world.

OK, thanks again for making the attempt. I am sending this input to the folks who produced the survey, and hope it will have a positive effect.

When we get something that is more usable, we may try it again.

Once more, thanks all.
