Spotlight indexing may hang if Finale is installed System
Some '.mdimporter' files in the Spotlight folder may cause problems.

There is another reason Spotlight may hang - if you are a musician and have Finale 2010 installed, the file 'Finale.mdimporter' causes endless Crash Reporter entries in Console, and the indexing will either show a completion time of several days, or simply not ever finish. Removing this file and restarting Spotlight (using a utility or CLI command, or just restarting) fixes the problem. The file is found in /Library/Spotlight (note this is the root level Library, not the one inside System or Users folder).

There are several other '.mdimporter' files in that folder, to evidently assist Spotlight, and I have not had a problem with any except this one from MakeMusic.

[crarko adds: I haven't tested this one.]

There are some mdimporters that still doesn't work very well with Spotlight under Snow Leopard.
You will easily spot those if you open up Console.app, view all logs, and then search for mdimporter.
You must remove those that gives errormessages. The next step is to rebuild your spotlight index. You do this by entering your whole harddrive in the privacy pane of the Spotlight preferences pane in System Preferences. Then wait a few seconds, and remove it again.
Soon spotlight should get a dot in the magnifying glass of the main menu and start reindexing.

Shold Spotlight still perform badly I.e not use the indexes, then it is time to boot into "safe mode" then use a tool like Onyx or Coctail and clean all the system and kernel caches. -I clean everything expect my browser history.
Then you must repeat the steps from above to rebuild the spotlight indexes.

Best Regards

I use Finale and have had no problems with Spotlight. The removal of the Spotlight functionality seems a high price to pay. I think it likely that another fix may be a better solution, such as emptying caches and restarting the index.

Thank you!
I just got a new drive and mdworker was constantly crashing. I came to MacOSXHints after running out of ideas and here this hint was.
The original drive was indexed when I had Finale 2007, and I just recently got Finale 2010, so I hadn't noticed this until 120 GB had to be indexed.

Thank you.
