Use Transmit 4 for read/write FTP access in Aperture Apps
Transmit 4's new Disk feature allows you to mount an FTP favorite as a volume in the Finder. That means any application can have native-ish FTP support with both download and upload capability (unlike the one-way FTP support built into the Finder).

This is a simple hint, and an extension of the Transmit 4 documentation. But since it's directly extending the Finder's functionality independent of the Transmit App itself, I thought it hint-worthy. I'm finding this especially useful with Aperture, which doesn't have built-in FTP support, although you can purchase a rather expensive plug-in for FTP.

After mounting the destination favorite via the menubar Transmit icon, the volume will show up in the Finder sidebar, and also in any Open/Save dialog. In Aperture, this also allows access to the volume through the Export menu item, which additionally allows resizing, renaming, and foldering before the export is completed. This will save many a step in the uploading of photos to remote servers, and brings us one step closer to true OS-level FTP support.

[robg adds: If you just want system-level FTP support, and not all of Transmit 4's useful features, you can install MacFUSE -- this is exactly what Transmit 4 does, in fact. We've run a number of hints on MacFUSE, so if you want to dive in, there are hints that can help.]

Thanks for this. I own another piece of software Expandrive that adds various shares to your Finder sidebar, including FTP sites I manage.

I also own Aperture and liked its elegant web exports but until reading this I hadn't put the two together as a workflow. Very useful.

I also own Expandrive (and Transmit), in my experience Expandrive is not very reliable. As soon as Panic came with Transmit 4 I tried it and . . . I have seen none of the reliability issues I had with Expandrive!

Is there really a *simple* way to enable read and *write* FTP support for the Finder? I could not find any hints on this on the MacFuse Web site. I have MacFuse installed but connecting to an FTP site still gives me only read access in the Finder....

thanks, Helge

I kinda like the simplicity of using Transmit 4!
But if you look for simple AND free, hmmm.

MacFuse is free, but not so very simple.
Transmit is simple, but not free . . .

Only 32-bits? Not on my Mac!
At this very moment Aperture 3 (in 64-bit mode) is exporting close to 300 photo's to my zenPHOTO website using Transmit 4's Disk feature. No problem!

When you start your Mac in 64 bit kernel, it will not work. It only works In 32 bit kernel, has nothing to do with the fact that Aperture itself will run in 64 bit - it's the kernel start up...

Confirmed: you can't mount as disk if you boot 64bit, which is unfortunately a dealbreaker for me--also a point of confusion, as I can manually do the operation with MacFUSE (granted, it's over SSH; I'm guessing they're using a port of CurlFTPfs or something similar).

Thanks for the additional info about MacFUSE. I will say that over the past few days while happy to be using the Disk feature to export from Aperture, I still find a feature lacking that sent me back to doing it the old way- zipping/archiving. I'll have to look into an automator task that helps out in that department. Also, the authors of that rather expensive Aperture Plug-in I mentioned, Ubermind, have just released a 64bit version and lowered the price to $25. Uberupload also provides archiving upon export. But you may want to 15-day trial it first as it's been known to be a bit buggy at times.
