Use a hidden gesture to change volume in Logic Express 9 Apps
In Logic Express 9, it's neat that you can zoom in the Arrange window with the pinch gesture on the trackpad, but in using this gesture, I inadvertently discovered another.

For the selected track, you can adjust the volume slider by using this gesture: leave one anchor finger stationary on the right half of the trackpad. Swipe another finger up and down on the left half to control the slider. (This also works if the anchor is on the top half, and the swiper goes left/right along the bottom half.)

I looked in the manual and searched on the web, but was unable to find documentation on this non-standard trackpad gesture in either location. I know that this works at least on a MacBook Pro (13", model 5,5), running 10.6.3 and Logic Express 9.0.0.

Use a hidden gesture to change volume in Logic Express 9

This also works in Garageband '09 (I have version 5.1).

I think of the gesture as rotating a knob on a physical mixing board. Place two fingers on the trackpad and then rotate them around each other.

This is documented in the Garageband help file as follows:

To adjust track volume: Rotate clockwise to increase the volume, or rotate counter-clockwise to decrease the volume.

Actually, to clarify a bit on this function, I believe that the trackpad just registers the "two fingers down and one moving" as scrolling. (It works right now in Safari, and in Logic) Scrolling over many other interface parts, especially Logic's built in synths and plugins, is standard "adjust this" bevavior that i have used for some time. I don't know if it is documented though. (i also don't know how i know to do that...hrmm.)

since posting this i discovered that, as suggested in the above comment, the gesture is actually the rotate gesture. i still couldn't find it in the logic docs, but garage band has it.
