Archive multiple Mail messages as single text file

I just wanted to archive email messages as text. I assumed I'd need an export menu or script, and spent nearly an hour looking through Apple's site and discussions for that, or for third party software that would export my mail messages as text. (Of course, you can archive a mailbox, but they can only be read by importing back into Mail. I just wanted a plain and simple text archive.)

The too-obvious solution: select a group of emails (no need to expand threads), say, all of February, and choose Save As. At the bottom of the Save As window, set the Format pop-up to Rich Text. Mail will then save the selected messages (expanding threads as necessary) to a single RTF file, including images, audio attachments, etc.

I was sure this would have been posted previously, but I searched and couldn't see a similar hint.
