Archive multiple Mail messages as single text file Apps
I just wanted to archive email messages as text. I assumed I'd need an export menu or script, and spent nearly an hour looking through Apple's site and discussions for that, or for third party software that would export my mail messages as text. (Of course, you can archive a mailbox, but they can only be read by importing back into Mail. I just wanted a plain and simple text archive.)

The too-obvious solution: select a group of emails (no need to expand threads), say, all of February, and choose Save As. At the bottom of the Save As window, set the Format pop-up to Rich Text. Mail will then save the selected messages (expanding threads as necessary) to a single RTF file, including images, audio attachments, etc.

I was sure this would have been posted previously, but I searched and couldn't see a similar hint.

[robg adds: If it's been posted previously, I can't find it.]

I use this method all the time except selecting "Raw Message Source" instead of RTF. I use this to archive my old messages out of Mail.app and into standard Unix-style mbox text files that are easily compressed, searched, and otherwise much more portable. They're also easy to re-import back into Mail.app in the event I really need to see that email thread from 2005.

A lawyer friend has pointed out that if your emails may be subpoenaed by, say, an angry soon-to-be-ex spouse, you can archive them like this and park them with your attorney, where they may be out of reach.

And of course, do a secure erase.
