Use Smart Albums in iPhoto to erase default photo titles Apps
I use iPhoto almost every day to import pictures from my camera, my iPhone, or my friends' cameras, but I usually forget to put a good name on the imported images -- so they import with those ugly titles such as P102453.jpg, IMG_1453.jpg, etc.

To partially solve this problem, I've created a Smart Album with the following conditions:

If [Any] of the following conditions are true:
  • Title starts with P10
  • Title starts with IMG...
  • Title starts with DSCN
  • Title starts with SANY
Note that different cameras will probably have different prefixes, so adjust as necessary.

Now, after importing my photos, I just open this Smart Album, select all the photos, then use Photos » Batch Change (Shift-Command-B), and set the title to empty text. No more ugly titles!

Why not just uncheck Titles on the View menu?

Because sometimes you want to see the actual titles you've set on items. I've been using a smart album exactly as described for a while now, but I do manually set the titles on a lot of items as well.

This hint makes me sad. Why would I destroy the title which uniquely identifies the picture and replace it with nothing or something that probably isn't unique? If i'm looking for img_0342 I can find it. If I'm looking for a picture called "bob" I'll probably find 12 of those, and then if I was in burst fire mode figuring out which is exactly the right one is a giant hassle.

I just go to the Last Import under Recents and batch change from there. I can also add the keywords that I want right in the Last Import folder.

Thanks.

I'm now confused: I thought that changing the titles of photos in iPhoto ONLY changed their 'iPhoto' name, NOT the underlying file-name - so it's the equivalent to changing the name of an alias.

I want any name-changes I make to apply to the original files, so that if I change photo-management software, I don't lose all the names I've laboriously added - is this something I have to do BEFORE I load the pics into iPhoto or not?!

I'm confused about why someone would want to do this. If you want a meaningful title, fine. But why is an empty string better than a consecutively numbered title? I happen to love the fact that my cameras consecutively number my images, as I can find specific ones when I need to very rapidly. Replacing that with an extremely non-unique and information-free empty string is unintuitive to me.

Please don't interpret this as a "That's not useful to me, so it can't be useful to anyone else" comment. I'm really trying to understand why an empty string is a useful replacement, given that one can easily turn the display of titles off.

I doubt this was the OP's reason for doing this, but I know I hate when I sync my photos with FB and they all get uploaded with captions of "IMG0401", "IMG0402", etc.

Erasing meaningful data is a scary practice to suggest. That's why I use a separate app to batch name the files BEFORE importing into iPhoto. For example: files get named 20100331-Event Name-###.jpg then imported into an iPhoto event of the same name. After that I can rename the titles individually or add keywords in a batch if I choose.
That said, I've moved to Aperture which does the batch renaming (among other things like adding keywords to the file's metadata fields) on import. That feature was almost enough to justify the upgrade by itself.

Why not apply a keyword or comment to all pictures when you import them (Vacation 2010...) instead? Or create an album/event with similar name? No point in removing data.

This hint is stupid.
