Create a PDF from an Office document using Google Docs Apps
A few days ago, I was using a desktop at home to try to print a .docx document (from Word 2008). Unfortunately, the home machine had a much older version of Office, and it couldn't open the .docx format.

As a workaround, I uploaded the .docx document into Google Docs, edited it a little bit, and then clicked Print. This converts the document into a PDF, so all you need to do is save that window to create a local PDF. (This also works if you create a document using Google Docs and click Print.)

[robg adds: Another way to do this would be to send the .docx file through Microsoft's Open XML File Format Converter. After conversion, you could then open the document in older versions of Office.]

I've had much more luck using NeoOffice (http://www.neooffice.org) than the Microsoft-provided XML converter. NeoOffice has been able to open and translate PPTX documents that the Microsoft-provided translators crashed on... And of course, NeoOffice is free.

Or just open it with TextEdit.

Exactly. Or the free Bean, or Textwrangler.
No need to reinvent the wheel...

Yeah, I'm all for Bean, but I don't think you want to open a Word document in Text Wrangler. Sure, it will open it up, but it's going to have a lot of garbage characters mixed in with the actual text.

If you're thinking just getting plain text out of a Word doc, use the strings command in the Terminal, pipe it and cat it out to a text file.

This is a neat trick, and I thought I would add it to my list of tools students can use to convert their files to PDF format.

But when testing it, I found a major problem (at least for my usage) - Google docs won't import word processing (e.g., .doc, .docx) files over 500k. For text only documents, no big deal. But if you add any graphics or photos, that easily jacks up the size.

I'll certainly keep it in mind, though, if I'm in a situation similar to poster's.

Awhile back I was on the road and didn't have my mac with me... someone sent me a .docx file I couldn't open on the public computer I was using.

Enter Zamzar (http://www.zamzar.com). It's a free service that has a paid option. Converts almost anything to almost anything... of course, the free version waits about half and hour (I think? can't remember) before sending you the converted file... and there's a size limitation, too, but it's better than nothing in a pinch.

I'm pretty sure OpenOffice.org can read and print those...

Also, the hint title is confusing...

I can create a PDF from an Office Document just by clicking Print and then clicking PDF in the bottom left corner...

You could also go File -> Print -> PDF (button) -> Save as PDF...
