Comment moderation test Site News
In an attempt to block the flood of spammy comments, I've now enabled comment moderation (and, hooray, disabled the annoying comment captcha). This means I'll need to review your comments, though thanks to the way the system works, only your first comment will have to be manually approved (I hope).

You'll see a message to this effect when you submit a comment; I'll do my best to get to the queue multiple times per hour for today, just to see how it goes.

I know this isn't ideal, but it seems better than the broken captcha system that resets the captcha characters every time you preview.

Update: If you've published a comment in the last 18 months, you're now auto-approved, so you won't see a captcha, and your comment won't be moderated. This means it should be easier for you (instant comments!) and me (I'll only have to review new commenters' first submissions).

Great, Rob! Trying it out with this comment here to get it out of the way.

Kudos to you, Rob, for taking on the extra work. Let's hope you're not banging your head against the wall for the rest of the week. ;-) Keep up the great work!

I strongly prefer the old system myself. I don't care about the captcha characters changing. And it lets you edit the comments right away. Please consider reverting to the old system.

Now that you've posted a comment, you should be *on* the old system: your comment will appear right away, and it will be instantly approved. Please let me know if it's *not* working that way.

Testing to see if it's working.
Yep it works! Thanks! and since I can now edit comments again, could you please make it possible to change
ratings once given. I sometimes give wrong ones by mis-clicking or if I misunderstand a hint on first reading. just like it happened when I rated this hint :) .

Sadly, that's not a feature I can enable, it seems. I'll dig a bit more, but it's not obvious on first glance at the config screen and files.

Yeah. I'll get it out of the way now, too. Imagine a world where people didn't waste our time. Alas...

So I guess that means you should moderate now and get the hard work out of the way, that way when we post later, we'll be pre-approved?

Ultimately this is good news. I can't stand the old system - it would prevent me from posting.

Can someone post why this is needed or useful?
I don't grasp it as posted.

Thanks!

to give us the opportunity to test the system with rob and (hopefully) get us all authorised to post comments....

This basically stops newly registered users from posting unmoderated comments. That will block the spammers, unless they first post some meaningful comment and only then start abusing the system.

(As a result, right now everyone is considered such "new" user, until the system has learned most of them...)

This is odd - this post was supposed to reply to another thread here - not this one!
YIKES.

As for spam, only in case things get worse again and if the system automatically removes spam when reported by some number of people: I'd appreciate it if the 30 second delay between reports is lowered a bit.

(It's quite annoying to see something like "This site requires 30 seconds between submissions" while trying to report multiple comments by a spammer.)

I wish I had more fine-grained control over the anti-flood engine, but I don't. It's one setting for everything, and it applies to the site admin, too. Sigh.

Alright, then maybe you can reveal how useful reporting abuse is to you?

Like if one spammer posts multiple comments, does it help you if we report all the abusive comments (while I assume you'd be looking into the spammer's profile yourself as well, and hence might even be annoyed by reports you already covered)?

Or: does flagging as abuse maybe automatically delete comments when some threshold is reached?

Earlier today a comment in another question was approved. Still, a new comment in this very question a few minutes ago gave me the "awaiting to be approved" message again. (Or maybe things have changed since my first comment was approved, which needed another "first" approval?)

(Meanwhile that other comment above was approved as well. You're quick!)

I guess I was being naive -- you've apparently been doing such a good job cleaning out the spam that I was under the impression this site wasn't getting hit by much of that sort of nonsense. I can only remember one time in all my years of following your site that I noticed a spurt of spammy messages! Good luck with this new system.

Apparently I must've stated my name as Mike Wallace during the interview, as people were expecting 60 Minutes. I only had about 12 minutes, though, and the point was information not investigative reporting. Good thing I long ago gave up trying to please everyone.
