Hide ScreenFlow icons while recording Apps
One of my most-used tools is Telestream's ScreenFlow. I use it for everything from the occasional Macworld Videos that I create to recording small 'how to' movies for use both here and on the Macworld site. I've even used it to record how-to videos for family - it's often quicker to do that than it would be to create a complex email explaining the steps.

One thing that bothered me about ScreenFlow, though, was that its icon appeared in the Dock whenever I recorded a movie. (Its helper app icon also appeared in the menu bar, but that didn't bother me as much.) Today, after finally reading the help files (yea, I know, RTFM!), I discovered that it's trivial to hide both icons, if desired. For others who haven't read help, here's the simple fix...

To hide the Dock icon, just make sure the 'Launch ScreenFlow Helper at user login' option is enabled in the General tab of ScreenFlow's preferences. Once that's set, you can quit the actual ScreenFlow application, and its icon won't appear in the Dock while recording. To hide the menu bar icon, disable the 'Show ScreenFlow options in menu bar' option in that same Preferences panel. With the menu bar icon hidden, you'll have to use the keyboard shortcut (Shift-Command-2 by default) to start and stop your recordings.

The only minor twist to the above is if you are adding to an existing recording. If that's the case, make sure you enable the 'Close ScreenFlow before recording' option in the dialog that appears when you go to add a new recording.
