10.5: Remove the Google search box in Safari 4 in Leopard Apps
Leopard only hintThis hint updates this older hint to work in Safari 4 in Leopard. Disclaimer: Proceed at your own risk...Cocoa, to me, just means a hot drink made from chocolate powder!

This hint requires you have Apple's Xcode installed. Also make sure Safari is not running when you do this.
  1. In the Finder, control-click on Safari and select Show Package Contents. Navigate into Contents » Resources » English.lproj. Create a backup of ToolbarItems.nib, then open the original in Interface Builder.
  2. Set the main window's view mode to List (middle button in toolbar)
  3. Navigate into (by clicking the 'reveal' triangles) Window » Content View, and you'll see two Split View entries. Open each of those, and you'll see a Custom View and a Web Search Field. Delete the Web Search Field from both Split View entries. (Just select them and press Delete.)
  4. Save the file and quit Interface Builder.
Install keywurl to search from within the URL bar.

[robg adds: Modifying a program in this way will break code signing. If the program no longer seems to work right after this hint, the broken code signature is, most likely, the source of the problem. Also, in 10.6 the nib file is compiled, and you'll have to use a workaround, as described in this hint, to modify the nib file.]

If you want a simpler way to do it, download this:
http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/5/29/41982/ToolbarItems.nib.zip
Then go to safari, open package contents, resources. Drop it in there, click replace... and you're done! All the hard work done for you.
(Don't forget to compress the resources file before you edit it, just in case you don't like not having a search bar. Just open the resources.zip file created to undo all of this.)

I also recommend the plug-in for safari called Glims. With it you can use your address bar for searching (and not only google, but any site you want as well, with shortcuts that you can create and edit).

I agree, Glims is a great plug-in. Simple, easy, and no terminal stuff.

Or An Easier Way To Do It

Removing the Google search in Safari's address bar is easy with Secrets. I have not done this particular option. But it is one of the many choices that are offered in the Secrets preference pane.

For more information about Secrets, A database of hidden settings for Mac OS X, go to:

Secrets' setting not working
Authored by: xhinter on Feb 05, '10 03:32:05PM

I gave it a try to no avail. Maybe a leftover from the beta version.
You can view its values in Terminal
defaults read com.apple.Safari AddressBarIncludesGoogle
-1 show (default)
0 hide

Broken CM search
Authored by: xhinter on Feb 06, '10 12:23:21PM

I forgot to mention that I tested it only on 10.5.8.
And, that it breaks the contextual menu 'Search with Google' in Safari.
(Btw, Rob rewrote the hint. I think my version was succinct though.)

There is a great Mozilla plug in if you are in a foreign country but still want google.com rather than a local Google to be your Firefox Search box.

Need ToolbarItems.nib again, please!
Authored by: tristanakkord on Mar 16, '10 12:52:59PM

Hey guys,
hope you can help! I followed beeb's link and downloaded the manipulated ToolbarItems.nib.zip. Then implemented it and it worked JUST FINE! I loved my Safari 4 without that *beep* Google-Box.
Now, Safari's been updated and I forgot to backup that particular file before installing. Thus came back here just to find that this link won't work anymore.

Please, if someone has any idea, from where to get that magic file again, I'd be really grateful!!!
Cheers!

You say "Create a backup of ToolbarItems.nib, then open the original in Interface Builder." Not possible. ToolbarItems.nib is a FOLDER. You need to talk about opening some item inside that folder.
