Create a size-limited playlist of random albums in iTunes Apps
If you like to listen to complete albums, but cannot fit your entire library on your iPod, create a Smart Playlist that contains a random selection of entire albums.

First, in iTunes, turn on Shuffle with the Controls » Shuffle » Turn on Shuffle menu item. Select the Shuffle menu again, and check Shuffle by Album. Next, create a new Smart Playlist with these conditions:
  • Match the Rule 'Media Kind' is 'Music'
  • Limit to 7GB selected by random (i.e. for an 8GB iPod)
  • Check 'Live Updating' to update the Random Album Playlist by selecting and deleting albums in the Playlist
[robg adds: While this clearly works, the disadvantage is that iTunes is set to random play by albums in normal use as well. I'd be interested in finding a method of creating a random-by-album playlist while maintaining random-by-track standard iTunes playback, instead of having to remember to toggle the shuffle order manually each time.]

Just make an intermediate playlist: one playlist that encompasses all of your iTunes music, and set that playlist to play random by album. And have the smart playlist point to the intermediate playlist.

I have several playlists that use the trick above for one reason or another. The great thing is, you can make the intermediate playlist smart too (for instance, all music added in the last year), or just a subset (for instance, all music that is fit to play in a car).

The best addition is a script to automatically re-fill the random-album playlist (I have this running every morning at 8:00):

tell application "iTunes"
	stop
delete tracks of playlist "━━ De juiste mix ━━"
	delay 1
	playpause
end tell

I've written an applescript that does this. I'd love to have someone offer ways to make it better.

you can get it here: Obley's Album Shuffler

to use this, you need to create a (smart)playlist that grabs at least one track of the albums you want in the final list.

for example, I like to hear a whole album at a time, but want to get mostly through my library before that album shuffles back in. If you build a play list based on "not played in x days" the albums get broken up and it's just a mess ;)
My source list gives me all tracks not played in x days and some other criteria.

I wish I could accomplish this entirely with smart lists, but have yet to figure a way to "get whole album where track in playlist"

I have Nanofibre, which makes a playlist of full albums randomly without changing settings/etc. I couldn't find the original source so I uploaded it here. The one time I used it on non-apple player the (rather old crappy) player broke, but it needed to go to be replaced by something apple anyway.
