The solution is to hold down the option key prior to selecting this menu item. When you do, Show Duplicates changes to Show Exact Duplicates. In this mode, iTunes shows only true duplicates, and not remixes or alternate versions.

In iTunes, a very useful feature is the File » Show Duplicates menu item. As expected by its name, you can use this feature to help weed out duplicates from your iTunes library. However, many people (myself included) have different versions of songs, remixes and such, which will show up as duplicates when using this feature.
The solution is to hold down the option key prior to selecting this menu item. When you do, Show Duplicates changes to Show Exact Duplicates. In this mode, iTunes shows only true duplicates, and not remixes or alternate versions.

Show only exact duplicate tracks in iTunes
Oh wow! That is EXACTLY what I need to clean up my library after having to do a recovery from my iPod.

I'm one of those guys that always tries the Option key on the Mac, and I didn't see this one!

Show only exact duplicate tracks in iTunes
I get the exact same number whether I press option or not. And some of the dupes were on different albums with different song lengths (live performances, for example).

Hey Dork,
Show only exact duplicate tracks in iTunes
Weird -- I saw the numbers listed at the bottom of the view. I'll check again tonight.
Show only exact duplicate tracks in iTunes
It definitely shows the file count at the bottom of the list.

Yes, so do I, now. I suppose I was looking a little higher in the window. User error as usual. Thanks for checking.
Show only exact duplicate tracks in iTunes
BTW: Show Exact Duplicates via the option key has been available at least since iTunes v8.0 from Fall '08. ---

And, for those of you running iTunes in VirtualBox or VMWare Fusion... (of course, nobody here runs Windows except under a VM, right???)
Show only exact duplicate tracks in iTunes
Anyone figure out what the criterion for exact duplicate is? I noticed, for example, that the same track in different formats will show up as an exact duplicate, or tracks with the same kind, name, album, etc., but that are actually different and have different lengths even also show up. I guess if you want fine control, you should use Dupin, or maybe create a playlist from the exact duplicates and use smart playlists to further refine the results.
Show only exact duplicate tracks in iTunes
Awesome! I really wish I knew about this a year ago when I was cleaning the library on my Mom's computer which had somehow gotten filled with duplicates! I always hated how it would show two songs as dupes even though they were on separate albums and one was 3 mins long and one was 10 mins! Why isn't this the normal behavior and option/shift the current behavior? The way it is now, the behavior is hardly "show duplicates", more like "show songs with multiple versions" (I'm sure someone else can come up with a better name.)
Show only exact duplicate tracks in iTunes
I just tried it and iTunes came up with one pair of duplicates. The only problem was they were 90 seconds different in length. Now, that's hardly a sign of them being identical!
Still can't find dupes in a *folder*
The Show Duplicates function works okay for a single playlist... but doesn't work at all when selecting a folder containing multiple playlists. [i want to know if any songs are repeated "across" the playlists inside a particular folder.]

Pure, concentrated awesome.

Show only exact duplicate tracks in iTunes
Not working here. I'd like to know which criteria iTunes uses, other than title. Songs of different lengths, sizes, and years appear as duplicates. I used it on my entire Music library. Edited on Jan 12, '10 09:23:09PM by MichaelE
Show only exact duplicate tracks in iTunes
It's not quite "exact". It seems that the diff between regular find dups and "exact" find dups is that regular checks the song title and artist, and "exact" checks song title, artist, AND album name. It does *not*, for example, look at track length. So use with caution!
