Create a Mac Pro-like metal desktop background Desktop
I was looking for a weird (don't ask why) background for my desktop, and I thought of the pattern for Dashboard's widget bar (a Mac Pro-like perforated metal strip). How could I make this into a uniform desktop pattern? The answer lies in /System » Library » Dock.app » (Control-click and pick Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu) » Contents » Resources.

First, I located perf.png in that folder, and dragged it to my desktop. Then, I opened that copy in Preview. I cropped this to 10x10 pixels, starting from the top hole with a one-pixel left margin, and ending below the hole to right (see example at right).

(On certain computers, for some reason, there is a different bottom to the hole. Leave a margin of one pixel if the hole is 3x4, and no margin if it is 3x5.) Save the file as a PNG, and then set it as your desktop picture with the Tile option. Result? Full metal desktop.

[robg adds: The image above is from my machine, and it's actually 9x10, but it worked in my testing...though I reverted to my rotating set of desktop pictures after testing.]

The correct path for Dock.app is /system/Library/Coreservices/Dock.app

Very cool - I just took your finished product included & re-sized it.

I like it!

@pete or any one - can you post a finished product screenshot?? Upload to some image hosting to get a feel for it?

I also made this background for my Mac, and I have the results on TwitPic, http://twitpic.com/wsaes - I also changed it back after, it's a bit overwhelming.

You're probably right, but either way I'd never make this my permanent desktop image anyway.

I found this a bit boring, so I experimented a bit in photoshop and this is my final result. I am fairly certain it will remain as my desktop for quite a while...

It's in 1280x800, but it is to recreate by making the wallpaper as described above, add the Leopard version off Aqua Blue on top with an opacity of 75% and "Vivid Light" as overlay method.

Funny how this reminds me of the default background (grey pattern) in System 6 and earlier. Kind of like a modern version of it.

I forgot about the depth-perception-illusion one gets from staring at the ceiling within an old VW Beetle. No thank you!

in 10.6.2, how do you chose the "Tile Option"?
Mine uses the image only once, making it huge.

Apples Keynote has some great background images in hi-res.
Just open package content and go to the path below.

/Applications/iWork '08/Keynote.app/Contents/Resources/Themes/Shared/Industrial_hi-res.jpg

How apropos that I use the Snow Leopard desktop pictures on my Unix account at work; considering this hint tells you how to put a scaled-up and smoothed version of the X-Window default root window pattern on your Mac desktop.
