10.6: Use some very old scanners under Snow Leopard Scanners
My Agfa SnapScan 1212u is about 10 years old now, but had been working perfectly through every OS X release. With the Update to Snow Leopard, however, the old app ScanwiseX wouldn't start anymore. The error I received was "ScanWise couldn't find ColorSync-Systemprofile."

To get my scanner working again, first I installed the OpenSource files from TWAIN SANE. First I installed libusb.pkg, then sane-backends.pkg, and finally sane-preference-pane.pkg.

With the freeware Scan Again for the SANE Extension (Scanner Access Now Easy), I could finally use my Agfa SnapScan 1212u again. After launching the app, it bounces a long time, but it will eventually work. There are not many preferences, but enough to do all important scans I need.

VueScan from Hamrick software handles an incredible number of scanners. It's not freeware but it is worth every penny it costs. It is very well supported and free updates are posted regularly.

Vuescan sounds nice, but before spending $40 on it, I suspect I might very well just buy myself a new scanner and shelve my 10 year old Agfa 1212, sigh.

The latest version of VueScan beats many of the scanning programs provided by the manufacturers in terms of features and results.

I have that very same Agfa which I still use to this day with my G4 iMac flat panel running Tiger. I will soon be facing your same situation when I buy my new 21.5 inch iMac which will be running Snow Leopard. Thanks for the hints.

I'm using SANE since Leopard with an old Artec Ultima 2000. I had to extract the gt680xfw.usb firmware out of the windows drivers. Epson Perfection 2480 too works well as a snapscan(!) with SANE. Extraction of the windows drivers esfw41.bin was necessary too.
Thanks for the Scan\ Again.app cause since SL Digital\ Images.app does not work with the Artec (spinning beachball) and I had to use some other shareware application for scanning.

I have had no problem switching to SL with my 1212 using VueScan. The good thing about this software is that is will work with any scanner.

I also have a older slide scanner from nikon which never worked on a mac and using VueScan it works fine.

Just curious as I'm trying to get this cool tip working with latest Snow Leopard and my old Agfa Snapscan 1212u, am I missing something?

Downloaded and installed Sane, ImageCapture does recognize the scanner, but I just get a black scan, no actually scanning seems to take place.

Anyone?

Tried re-installing all Sane files again. Started to work, very frustrating but wonderful in a geeky kinda way.

TWAIN SANE upholds parental sanity

Mac Mini 2007, OSX 10.6.2. My daughter scans her IRL drawings on an Agfa Snapscan 1212u, an excellent scanner with a long and productive history in this family. As above, it didn't work after the upgrade to Snow Leopard. She tried Vuescan but didn't appreciate the large dollar signs overlaid on the very first scan she made (trial version or buy-right-now-or-else version?). Then we installed the open-source alternative in this hint, and it worked straight away. "I like this one," she said, and plunged into editing.

Thank God and FLOSS. :)

Same reaction here to vuescan. I thought I'd at least get to make 10 or 20 good scans with the trial, but I got those obnoxious dollar signs right from the start. I'm just very leery about spending $40 on scanning software for my 10 year old Agfa SnapScan 1212U. Doesn't seem like a good investment. Will probably get a new scanner when I can decide which to get.

Hmm... everything worked up until now (Jan 2010). We've just installed 10.6.6, but the problem may have been caused earlier, because my daughter hasn't been doing any scanning for quite a while.

It doesn't look like SANE has released any newer versions since I last downloaded them, and ScanAgain seems to have vanished from the Net (all download links go back to the original mac.com homepage, which doesn't exist anymore, even as an alias to me.com).

ScanAgain opens, but can't see the Agfa SnapScan 1212u scanner (hitting Scan provides a blank image, not surprisingly since there is no movement from the scanner; hitting Preview brings up "inMethodMakeCommand", pressing OK on that brings up "inMethodDoPreview.Action" but nothing else; Find Scanners has no result). Image Capture can't see the scanner at all. We reinstalled all the SANE packages and restarted, but still have the same problem.

The scanner seems fine. Is anyone else using the SnapScan 1212u with OSX 10.6.6?

This tip saved my day, my Agfa Snapscan 1212u from 2000 is back in business! After a restart it shows up in Image Capture (after a 10 s delay) where I can make basic settings and visualy chose the scan area so there is no need to install additional software. I also unchecked the drivers I don't need in the pref pane but I'm not sure if that really had any affect on performance.

10.6: trouble using TWAIN SANE
Authored by: gpc on Dec 10, '10 10:33:30AM

I've tried to set up TWAIN SANE on a Macbook Pro, Snow Leopard, to use with an HP 4570c. When I open Image Capture, it sees the scanner ("SANE USB" under "Devices"), but I can't do anything -- all the controls are grayed out except for "Cancel" and even it does nothing. In Console I see this error:

[0x0-0x1a01a].com.apple.TWAINBridge[269]: [hp5590] Data requested won't fit in the bulk read buffer (requested: 2988600, buffer size: 1048576

hp5590 is the driver that's supposed to work with the 4570c. Any suggestions?
