10.6: Work around an iWeb and Pages crash issue in 10.6.2 Apps
Snow Leopard only hintRecently, I was asked to set up a web site for a church; since I didn't want to spend days doing it, I decided to try iWeb.

Things worked well until I updated to 10.6.2. Suddenly, iWeb was crashing on startup, without fail. Fortunately, someone on the Apple forums figured out a work-around.

If you've been getting crashes with iWeb or Pages that blame the SFWordProcessing Plug In, try using Font Book to disable the font named Hoefler. Even though Font Book insists the font is valid, it appears to be triggering the crash.

Once the font is disabled, you will be able to launch iWeb (and Pages) again without crashing -- although all occurrences of the Hoefler font will be rendered incorrectly.

See this discussion (and many others) for more details.

Before you go deleting fonts, try rebooting into Safe Mode by using Safe Boot. Hold down shift after a restart. This corrected the issue for myself and a couple other people I know. It appears the main issue could potentially be a corrupted font cache issue.

Just move the Hoefler fonts (there are two files) out of /Library/Fonts/ and replace them with the older Hoefler Text.dfont file.
You will then be able to open your file with correct rendering of the Hoefler font.

Something similar worked for me. I deleted the Hoefler Text font from Font Book, then dragged the two files from the trash to Library->Fonts. No more crashing, for whatever reason.

Howdy, Snow Leopard has changed several fonts from the dfont format to the ttc (true type collection) format. This includes Hoefler Text and Gill Sans as well as several System level fonts, e.g. Helvetica Neue. These fonts have given rise to problems in several programs. I wouldn't change out any of the System level fonts but I've take the Hoefler Text.dfont and GillSans.dfont from a 10.5.8 system placed them in a Temporary (Apple will fix the problem?) folder in my personal Fonts folder. Problem solved for those fonts for now. WAIT--- one of the suggestions on the Apple Forum given above was to do a Safe Boot (holed the Shift key down while booting) and then reboot normally. This clears several system caches. Right now it appears that things are running ok. ---
Good Luck,

Howdy,

I don't know what happened to all my nice spacing when I edited my entry but the relevant information added by the edit (and then edited by me again :-)) is:

WAIT--- one of the suggestions on the Apple Forum given above was to do a Safe Boot (hold the Shift key down while booting until the login screen shows up) and then reboot normally. This clears several system caches. Right now it appears that things are running ok. ---

Fonts are notorious for causing Application and System crashes. many times the Fonts can be bundled like the .suitcase packages from OS 9 or the .dfont packages in OS X and contain a single corrupt font while all the other int he package are clean. Said affected software will crash for all sorts of reasons while the Font Mangers all say everything is fine.

MS installs mandatory fonts with their Apps and those are known to crash other things.

Here is what worked for me (after I killed my page in the process): I looked under Font Book and found multiple duplicate fonts. I fixed that by consolidating them. Since that, the program seems to be working. I reactivated the Hoefler fonts, and it still works. Hope this helps those folks out there struggling with this.
Apple, please figure out a way to fix this, it is really painful to loose a whole site!
Andreas
