Add media to iTunes 9 automatically via Finder Apps
iTunes 9 automatically creates an iTunes Media (for new installs; iTunes Music if you've upgraded from a prior version) folder within your iTunes folder. In that folder is another folder called Automatically Add to iTunes. I presume this is for the new Home Sharing feature which allows one machine with iTunes to copy media from another machine.

This folder behaves in such a way that it's almost as if a number of Folder Actions are attached to it. For one, if iTunes is running, you can simply drop media in this folder and it will be added to your iTunes library. If iTunes is not running, the new media will be added the next time you launch iTunes. On top of that, the media files added to your iTunes library will be moved, not copied, so you don't end up with duplicates.

Finally, if you add a folder of content to the Automatically Add to iTunes folder, another folder will be created if there are files not added to iTunes. I have a friend who sent demo songs from his band, and in the folder he provided were pictures from their latest performance. The JPGs were placed in a separate folder titled Not Added to iTunes.

[robg adds: If you'd like to make it easier to use this folder, just make an alias elsewhere, add it to your Dock, Toolbar, Sidebar, etc.]

I'm in Tiger right now and this feature works great. Very useful. After more than 10 years of folder actions not working reliably it's kind of shocking to see this. Have no idea what technology is behind this a folder action or what.

Also, try dropping a jpg or other media into the folder. A new "Not Added" folder will be created and it will put each not supported item in date and timestamped folders!

This is probably handy for things like music downloaders (eMusic, etc.). Most of them have the option to automatically import into iTunes, but then they leave the duplicates out there. Now I can just set eMusic to download to that folder and leave the auto-ad-to-iTunes off.

Actually, the Automatically Add to iTunes folder will be saved to whatever/wherever your iTunes media is located. I set my iTunes Media Folder location to a different disc and a folder of a different name in iTunes Preferences. So, the Automatically Add to iTunes folder was added to my iPod Songs folder on my Music disc, not my iTunes folder.

This is nothing magical - no voodoo. They simply added a "Watch Folder" capability to iTunes.

I've set these up for Acrobat and Photoshop to do certain bulk tasks thru the years.

Yes - I do agree Folder Actions are buggy. But AppleScript and Automator are not.

Also - works similar to the Drop Box Folder in your Public Folder for external Users accessing a given Machine.

This works across network links, which is awesome. I put an alias to that folder (original on my mini) on my powerbook. Files dropped into the alias are added to the mini's iTunes library.

I think it should be more useful if iTunes should be able to create album named like folder putted in the "add automatically" folder...

I tryed but it seem it does not work...
iTunes simply puts the songs in the library...

Yet another nonsense feature. Is there any way to get rid of it? I don't want iTunes to do
anything apart from playing music, least of all creating folders where I don't want them.

Not sure if it can be disabled/deleted, but I don't think iTunes will ever create anything outside of your iTunes library folder. Plus I don't think it will create anything as long as you never manually copy stuff into the 'Automatically Add To iTunes' folder. If you don't want the 'Automatically Add To iTunes' folder, you could try simply deleting it and seeing if it comes back.

The folder reappears with every iTunes startup and my iTunes folder is the desktop,
so this is pretty annoying. But, I have found a solution: I have Hazel running on my
machine and applied a rule which puts this folder to the trash as soon as iTunes
creates it. :)
