10.6: Manage iPhone media using Preview Apps
I discovered this by accident. If your iPhone is connected to your Mac via USB, there will be a menu item in Preview, File » Import from [your] iPhone. This menu item will allow you to see, delete, and import media directly from the iPhone.

Opening Image Capture with your iPhone attached will further allow you to customize the action to be taken any time you connect the iPhone. This includes opening Preview and importing by default, as well as options for iPhoto and others, with "AutoImporter", an auto-download program as another option which can be helpfully configured separately.

Works in 10.5's Preview as well, although it doesn't allow delete, only see and import.

Just to clarify, "Media" here refers to pictures (and probably movies if you have an iPhone 3GS). You still have to use iTunes on an authorized computer to manage your music.

Nice we can import, but... I have a disabled iphone (I suspended ATT account, they disabled all networking - phone service, 3g, even wifi). I'd like to be able to USB transfer data (export) from MAC to phone, including text, notes if not emails. Any ideas? (Haven't decided yet whether to unlock/jailbreak)
