10.6: Use new custom labels in Address Book Apps
In the 10.6 version of Address Book, there are new categories that you can choose when naming phones and emails. iPhone is an option for a phone number in the pop-up menu, and MobileMe is an option for an email.

This actually carries over to the iPhone, too. If you use the hands-free features of the new iPhone 3GS, you can now say, for instance, Call Steve Jobs iPhone. I haven't seen this documented any where.

Really? I've been doing that since iPhone 1. A new "Other" label generated in Address book or on the phone gets copied either through iTunes or MobileMe Synch. BTW, it would be nice if Apple would let you turn off the MobileMe login request if you don't have, or want, an account. The app works anyway, without a MMe login, to synch addresses, calendars, and Safari links.

Yes, but this is apple doing the custom label creation. The interesting question is why they are doing it.

lol This seems kind of funny to me. Are we going to start identifying phone numbers by the model phone we're calling? "Call Dan's LG env3" =D

Interesting, indeed. I've been using custom labels for some time, which is one of the main reasons I continue to have MobileMe for the address book sync between my two Macs and iPhone 3G. I am a Gmail user, though, but the contact sync with labels is really lame. The big ones are the BlackBerry phones...most people I work with have both a BlackBerry for work and a cell phone. With this, I'm able to label one as mobile, and the other as "BlackBerry". The options are unlimited, which is great so I can quickly find and dial a number.

Meh. What we really need is the ability to add custom fields- been waiting for that since version 1.0.

I've been using this for a long time too. Since I get unlimited mobile to mobile minutes on AT&T, I label the cell phone numbers for those friends as AT&T. I'm not ever crunched for minutes anyway, but that way when they call I'm really not crunched for minutes. Similarly, I do use the "iPhone" tag for friends with iPhones, then I know I do things like send them Emoji in SMS. Handy thing indeed.

The voice recognition on the 3GS even seems to get along ok with it, I say "Call Sharon mobile" and it comes back "Calling Sharon AT&T"

I'm wondering how to remove a custom label once created. Any ideas?

To remove a custom label: Choose another label where the custom was was in use then move from the card where it was created. Should be gone form the pop-up menu. More here.
