I write a lot of notes to myself in TextEdit. Ever since the autosave feature was introduced, I use it as a better version of Stickies. I was surprised when Snow Leopard kept changing my text, specifically turning ip address into pi address over and over.
As far as I can tell, the spell correcting mechanism doesn't learn that it is making an undesirable change when the user repeatedly fixes an unwanted correction, making it impossible to type the desired text.
I disabled "Correct Spelling Automatically" from the Edit menu, and thought all was well. I didn't notice that this method only disables the function on a per document basis, until TextEdit had mangled another document. To turn off auto spell correction across all documents, you have to disable it in TextEdit's Preferences window.
