10.6: Permanently disable spelling correction in TextEdit Apps
I write a lot of notes to myself in TextEdit. Ever since the autosave feature was introduced, I use it as a better version of Stickies. I was surprised when Snow Leopard kept changing my text, specifically turning ip address into pi address over and over.

As far as I can tell, the spell correcting mechanism doesn't learn that it is making an undesirable change when the user repeatedly fixes an unwanted correction, making it impossible to type the desired text.

I disabled "Correct Spelling Automatically" from the Edit menu, and thought all was well. I didn't notice that this method only disables the function on a per document basis, until TextEdit had mangled another document. To turn off auto spell correction across all documents, you have to disable it in TextEdit's Preferences window.

I don't want to nag, but it's been that way for years since Mac OS X 10.0

Why not use TextWrangler? It's free and it's a very feature-rich text editor.

Spelling correction is there without being automatic, and you can set a preference to re-open files when you launch it.

TextEdit has Preferences check boxes called "Check spelling as you type," "Check grammar with spelling," and "Check spelling automatically." If you uncheck them all, you'll never get nagged. If you uncheck the last one, ip will never be turned to pi while you type.

If you want to use autocorrection but need to tweak the list of corrections, then control-click (right-click) on the word that was automatically changed (such as "ip"). Choose the first item in the pop-up menu (Change Back to "ip"). Control-click again. Then choose either "Ignore Spelling" or "Learn Spelling." Your word will be added to the 'no correction list' or to the 'correctly spelled word' list.

First of all, this is nothing new in 10.6. Second, if there's a preference for it, it's hardly a hint. This site has really become watered down with crap like this lately.

If you don't like a hint, just move along. No need to spew...

Why do so many people have a need to spout off when they have only one eye open?

It seems sometimes that the internet is just a place for some people to exercise their "grumpy". Got to stay in shape you know:-)

Thanks, I wondered about that to!

I don't think that it was always that way, because I never stumbled about it before. Thanks for the hint.

Is this feature, although triggered in TextEdit, actually more global in Snow Leopard? Because it was affecting me in other apps, such as in comment boxes on the internet using Safari. I have enough trouble writing well in English and this was constantly making my comments look stupid. I am not analfabeto!

I ran across a hint for this new autocorrection feature somewhere a few weeks back and thought that it might be a real help to me. So I activated it. Then promptly forgot about it. I started seeing really stupid errors in comments I make on various blogs and things, but well after it was too late to correct. However, I could not remember where I had activated this thing and it was driving me nuts. I was afraid to post, for fear of really appearing stupid.

The other day I came across the new feature mentioned somewhere, so I immediately went to TextEdit and disabled it, bam, no more problems in Safari.

Man, I *wish* TextEdit was the controlling entity for this. I've been trying since way back in Leopard to figure out how to get iCal to stop underlining people's last names in red all the time. I can turn off "Check spelling as you type" in a given event's Notes field (via a right-click), but it always comes back the next time I create/edit another (or the same!) event...

I'm guessing that there's probably a hidden preference I could edit (via defaultswrite?), but I hesitate to attempt such things willy-nilly...

<sigh>

Thanks a lot! I just installed SL and was aghast when TextEdit turned "Parser" into "Prasser" (German for wasteful person) and "Kryptografie" into "Kryptogramme". Why do apps have to pretend they're smarter than the user?
