10.6: Search by folder by default on 10.6 System 10.6
For those who haven't noticed it yet, there's a minor but long-overdue change in 10.6: The Finder Preferences' Advanced tab now features a drop-down menu that allows you to pick the default search behavior. You can choose from Search this Mac, Search the Current Folder, and Use the Previous Search Scope.

[robg adds: Due to the number of hints here related to changing default search behavior in 10.5, I felt it worth publishing this one on its own, despite it being neither obvious nor undocumented.]

That's a popup, not a dropdown. Please stop using that horribly Windowsy sounding term for popups.

This is one of the most useful UI changes in 10.6. Search this folder is almost always what I want, now it can finally be the default behavior!

(I found this as soon as I installed 10.6, while futilely looking for a fix for Finder's base ten file size reporting.)

Too bad Apple didn't add a choice for "Contents" versus "File Name." I typically search for file names, but the searches always begin with contents.

Find by Filename

In any Finder window, command-F will do a Find by Contents search. Command-shift-F will do a Find by Filename search.

Found this while running through the Finder menus with modifier keys held down; quite a few hidden features tucked in there!

So they finally decided to partially fix what they broke in 10.5 Leopard? Although I can use Cmd-Shift-F to search by file name, it still defaults to "This Mac," and it kills the purpose of the "quick find" feature. Too bad this fix doesn't work in Leopard. And too bad Snow Leopard ("Built for compatibility") doesn't work on a my quad-G5.
