10.6: Exclude words from spelling auto-correction System 10.6
Should you have a word that you do not want the system to auto-correct (omg is changed to omega, for example), but do not want to permanently add it to the dictionary because it's not a real word, here's a workaround.

In the Language & Text System Preferences panel, click on the Text Substitutions tab, and then put the non-word in both the Replace and With columns. That way, when you type that non-word, it is replaced with itself, and the spelling auto-correction never takes place!

What's wrong with right-clicking on the word and choosing "Ignore Spelling" instead of "Learn Spelling"?

I believe "Ignore Spelling" applies only to the current session for an app. Once you quit & relaunch, you have to ignore the word again the next time.

That's why you should choose "Learn spelling". Then it gets stored in your user dictionary. Note that every language (and combination of languages) has its own user dictionary.

Frankly, I wish Snow Leopard was more like the iPhone and would remember which words I do not want to be substituted. It would also be nice if it gave some kind of visual indication when it happens like the iPhone does so it is harder to replace something that I actually wanted without me noticing.

Interesting one this. It would be less of a pain if reversing the auto-correction was easier. In Microsoft Word for instance, you press undo and all that is undone is the auto-correction. In Pages, undo kills the last letter or two typed as well so you just encounter the same problem over and over again, and the easiest way to stop it seems to be to keep typing and then come back and force the issue. In Numbers this is even more of a pain with the three-click focus to edit cell text issue.

Thanks for the hint, I'll try to come up with a list now :).

Agreed that reversing the correction should be easier in Pages. But on my Snow Leopard system, Pages is the *only* app that replaces the hint's example (omg) with Omega. This is because of the "Automatically use spell checker suggestions" preference. I've seen the rest of the system automatically correct, iPhone-style, words with swapped characters ('teh' to 'the' but with many more words), but that option doesn't appear in TextEdit or the "Language & Text" prefPane.
