10.6: Change icon size in Finder windows via the trackpad Laptop Macs
After upgrading to Snow Leopard, I found that I can change the icon size in the Finder's Icon view windows using the MacBook's multi-touch trackpad. To do so, just use a two-finger zoom/pinch gesture to either zoom in or out -- this works on the Desktop, or in an active Finder window in Icon view mode.

[robg adds: I was hoping this might also work to change the text size in List and Column view modes, but no luck. It only works in Icon view mode.]

This worked in 10.5, though it is much smoother in the new 10.6 64-bit Cocoa Finder.

I discovered this hint purely by accident almost immediately after upgrading. Quite frankly I find it useless and annoying. I wish it could be disabled without disabling the gesture completely. I'm getting tired of accidentally resizing all of my icons because my thumb is barely touching the trackpad and I'm trying to mouse around.

+1 this is a horrible mis-feature, I keep messing up my desktop (and crashing Finder) due rescaling icons and loosing my spacial organisation of whatever active project I'm working on. Tempted to disable the multi-touch trackpad features (other than two finger scrolling.

I can replicate this behavior in the finder, but not on my desktop. Sadly, it is my desktop that I'd really appreciate this feature – any suggestions?

Interesting that it does not happen on your Desktop.

works on the desktop in 10.5, but you must have hidden or closed any other window (you can let Finder windows opened, but must select the Desktop) i.e. doesn't work while using Exposé.

I too wish I was able to disable this "feature" without disabling gestures completely.

I often resize the icons by accident, and it messes up my icon positions on the desktop.

Yes, a better hint would be a post about how to disable this "feature". After continually resizing the icons on the Desktop by accident, I'm back to using my trusty mouse.

This was always possible in 10.5 in both Finder and the desktop, as long as you had a multitouch trackpad.

This has been possible since the MacBook Air was released in January/February 2008 with 10.5.2 and every version since with multitouch trackpads.

Hi all,
I really appreciate this function, but I am unable to do it with the mouse, I can only do it with the trackpad. With mouse I can only zoom in-out the whole screen, but it does not change ONLY the icons size, which is really usefll for me when working with trackpad
Does anyone know if it is possible (and) how to do it with mouse?
Cheers

Open System Preferences.
Click Trackpad
CLEAR checkbox next to "Open & Close"
Voilà!

I hope this helps other freaks out there like me!

In 10.5 Finder Preferences > Advanced > Zoom using Trackpad (deselect)

I didn't try it in SL, let us know.

Anybody got this feature to be disabled without disabling the whole pinch zoom feature? Please post if you did so!
Any help greatly appreciated!

Found it out. Well, it's not a "clean" hint but... anyway, it works! Note that it doesn't prevent accidentally icon resize, it simply let you step back to your arranged Desktop before size change.

First of all, set up your desktop the way you want, then lock the two following files to prevent accidentally changes:

- com.apple.finder.plist (it's placed in ~/Library/Preferences/) -- locks icon' sizes
- Desktop's .DS_Store (~/Desktop/.DS_Store) -- locks icon's position on the Desktop

While lock the first one is simple because it's visible and it can be done in the Finder, to lock the second one there are two ways: set file attributes via SetFile command in terminal ("/Developer/Tools/SetFile -a L ~/Desktop/.DS_Store", without quotes; you need Developer Tools installed on your System), or enable "show invisible file" option in Finder through Onyx, TinkerTool or Cocktail; then search for Desktop's .DS_Store and lock it.

From now on, all desktop changes will not be saved; to revert to saved Desktop arrangement simply relaunch Finder (it also mean that if you add new files/folder to the Desktop after mod, they will be shown in their default position in descending order from right to left). In case you would like to modify your Desktop, you'll need to unlock those file, do the changes and relock them again.
