10.6: Use mouse-over-highlight in 10.6's Stacks System 10.6
If you set the folders in your Dock to display using the Grid option, and then click a Docked folder, the contents show and, of course, you can select the items using the mouse/keyboard.

What's cool now is that if you hold the mouse for a second or two on the folder before moving the cursor to the grid area (i.e. don't just click the folder to open it), you get the white highlight to show what item you're mousing over. It's an option that you can choose to use or not -- which is different from the days of on/off in 10.5.

[robg adds: In 10.5, you had to enable this behavior (though it functioned a bit differently) using the mouse-over-hilte-stack preference, as explained in this hint. Now it's always there, but only active if you drag your mouse into the grid area, instead of clicking, releasing, and then moving into the grid area.]

Or you can just forget the mouse after clicking the Dock icon, and navigate with arrow buttons. Up button lets you start from lower right grid corner, the others put you at the upper left.

I noticed this as well. But does it actually do anything? Is it just a visual aid?

If you have a huge monitor, and 100s of files in a docked folder, the visual aid will help you find where you're pointing.

And I was beginning to think you didn't like my first Snow submission :)
Thanks for posting it.

This doesn't seem to highlight all item names for me. I can't find a pattern as to which items get highlighted. Any suggestions?

Disregard. I was confusing this with the display of truncated file/folder names. (That was the pattern.)

Does anyone know if the 10.5 hack is still usable?

I like it and have it active in Leopard - but I'd hate having to pause for several seconds for it to activate every time.

Hack still works for Leo.
In Snow too, but why not have the choice?

It did *not* work for me when I tested it.

Also tried the 10.5 "defaults write" hack and found it does *NOT* work in 10.6

Yeah I noticed this more by mistake than anything else. There doesn't seem to be any great benefit though – the truncated names don't load any quicker, and really the 'hilte' as it used to be called makes more sense for keyboard navigation anyway.

Has anyone found a way to fix the broken sorting in stacks in SL yet :)?

Hint should read "if you *click* and hold the mouse for a second or two..." I did a mouse over at first and thought it wasn't working.

Also, the reason you have to click/hold and wait is so you don't accidentally drag the folder out of the dock. But you don't have to wait if you just double click/hold, or click to open the grid and then click/hold anywhere in the empty gray area to turn on the highlighting. Much better than waiting.

To avoid waiting for the stack highlight to activate use this terminal commands specific for Snow Leopard:

defaults write com.apple.dock mouse-over-hilite-stack -boolean YES
killall Dock

Note that in 10.5 it was "hilte" and in 10.6 it is "hilite"

Thank you so much for the 10.6 spelling! This was one of the things I was missing when I upgraded. Combined with the list hack (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20090903104925782), my dock is better than ever.

Awesome find! I was bummed I couldn't do this! (I didn't even know about it in 10.5 but I hated not being able to clearly see what I was pointing to in a stack because for some reason my cursor is sometimes a text insertion pointer when I open a stack!)
