10.6: Use a visual input source switcher System 10.6
If you press and hold Command-Shift-Space Bar, a HUD-style box appears at the center of the screeen and lists available input keyboards. Release and press the Space Bar while holding down Shift-Command cycles through the available choices.

[robg adds: For US users, the default Input Source shortcuts (Command-Space and Command-Option-Space) conflict with Spotlight. I was able to see the HUD panel only after reassigning the Input Source shortcuts; I set them to Option-Space and Shift-Option-Space. The screnshot at right is from my machine; click it for a larger version.]

Does not work in 10.5

The title states "10.5:". I guess it is a typo and should read 10.6 (the hint is tagged for such version, though). This does not work in 10.5.

These choices in the Language & Text System Preference module in 10.6 are grayed out OMM. I would love to know why.

A trip to the Keyboard Shortcuts segment tab the the Keyboard system preference allowed me to discover why.

And a related question:

'/System/Library/Input Methods/CharacterPalette.app/' and '/System/Library/Input Methods KeyboardViewer' are involved in launching the viewers. You can double-click the CharacterPalette.app to show the palette, what command opens the Keyboard Viewer?

That KeyboardViewer.app path should have been

'/System/Library/Input Methods/KeyboardViewer.app'

of course.

OMM the behaviour's slightly different: I have the input (flag) menu showing, and have restored the keyboard shortcuts to defaults to confirm:

- command-space brings up the new switching menu, by default switching to the previous layout

- command-option-space has the old behaviour of just changing the flag in the input menu to the next layout

- command-shift-space has the old behaviour of just changing the flag in the input menu to the previous layout

Only the first two are listing in the keyboard shortcuts.

@llee maybe it's because you didn't install fonts for them?
