Delete some or all of text entered into Spotlight menu System
I often use the calculator feature built into the Spotlight menu. When doing numerous calculations, I often wish the Clear key on an extended keyboard with a number pad would clear the already-entered text. Alas, 10.6 doesn't enable this. But here's what I discovered:

In 10.4, 10.5 and 10.6, you can use Option-Delete to clear the last word. In both 10.5 and 10.6, Command-Delete will clear all text already entered in the Spotlight menu (as will pressing the Escape key).

This is way cool. I never realized there was a calculator function in Spotlight. It makes sense but never knew.

Yeah the Clear button not working in Spotlight is a bummer - kind of Windows-esque in that regard.

But the Escape Key seems to be rather quick.

I'm still running Leopard at work - so it's nice that it works too.

Speaking of Windows-esque, it annoys me that the Home and End keys seldom work for anything on Macs. I use 'em in MS Office apps. Otherwise, it often seems that these keys do nothing. Sheesh. It's been how many years since OSX was introduced?

The calculater in spotlight has to be one of my favorite features of OS X! I have actually never even tried the clear button (in any app) and have always just used the escape key as is my habit from the windows world. But it's a lot more convenient being able to just enter my equation in the corner where it doesn't block anything and there's no app to close when I'm done, not to mention the fact that it's a lot easier to hit CMD-Space than it is to hit WindowsKey-R, type calc and hit ENTER.

I must be really dumb, but I have no idea how to see this calculator. How about a clue.

You don't have to find it anywhere; whenever you type in a complete calculation (in notation similar to several programming languages), it will show the answer as a search result. Some examples:

37+5
6*9
8/(5+3)*2^4
4%7

Actually, scratch the last one. Spotlight doesn't do mod that way; it will give an unexpected answer. Rather, Spotlight does calculations with percentages, such as:

50(4%)
150% * 6

This isn't really a Spotlight hint, but rather a text editing shortcuts hint. This behavior is consistent with that of almost every text field on the system. The option modifier applies the action to a whole word, whereas command applies the action to the whole line. (Examples: option-delete, command-shift-left arrow.)

or simply press control-A control-K
control-A moves to beginning of line
control-K "kills" text to the end of line

control-F (forward) control-B (backward) character work as well.
The option-F, option-B variants don't work

Ok, I've got the idea. Still I like using the Calculator.app with the RPN and Scientific options set.
