10.6: 'Put Back' by using Toolbar's Delete button Desktop
When I was testing out Snow Leopard's File » Put Back function in the trash, I tried clicking on the red Delete icon that I have in the Finder's toolbar while in the Trash folder.

When I clicked the Delete icon, Finder put the item back. I'm not sure if this is intentional or not, but it does make some sense.

The same applies to the keyboard equivalent Cmd+Backspace ...

It would make sense a bit better if the icon in the toolbar of a Trash window were something different. It would involve just a static icon change as opposed to a dynamic one where the Trash icon itself changes to 'eject' when a removable volume is dragged there.

Wouldn't you intuitively expect a delete button when viewing an item in the trash to permanently delete just that item? Wouldn't putting it back to where it was trashed from be the opposite of delete? It seems like really bad GUI design to me.

Nevermind Google or Palm. Maybe what Apple needs is to enter in a non-poaching agreement with Microsoft.

Possibly handy, although a more sensible GUI solution would involve maybe holding a modifier key (shift, or option, etc.), and then the delete icon would change to a "put back" icon (whatever that might be). Hitting delete to undelete is a bit counter-intuitive.

Not just the Delete button, but also the Move to Trash menu item, its contextual menu version, and its ⌘⌫ keyboard shortcut. Basically, Move to Trash (in all its manifestations) becomes Put Back when you're looking at something that's in the Trash.
