Convert DTS movie sound to AC3 for Apple TV usage Apps
The Apple TV is a neat little device with convenience in mind. However, its convenience falls short when it comes to supporting high bit rates. However, Ryan Pfleghaar (aka Post_Break) has found a slick way to convert the audio to AC3 instead of DTS. However, the installation of the files required to pull off the slickness isn't so slick. So with his help, I have created an AppleScript that makes installation of all those files easy with a single click.

After installation, all one simply has to do is type into Terminal:
$ mkvdts2ac3 path/to/file.mkv
If you don't want to keep the DTS track after conversion, add the -n flag to the above command:
mkvdts2ac3 -n path/to/file.mkv
[robg adds: Note that this hint requires an Apple TV that has been modified to run XMBC; here's one set of instructions for doing just that. I haven't tested this hint, as my Apple TV (though XMBC-enabled) is presently playing dead. :( ].

This does not require XBMC, this simply converts DTS to AC3 so you can then convert a video file for the AppleTV without losing 5.1 surround sound. DTS audio can not be used in a "pass-thru" method like AC3 where the audio is untouched and simply carried over.

You can see my updated article here.

Make sure that you make a copy of the video file you want to convert and use the -n otherwise your video converting apps might get confused since it will contain both DTS and AC3.

The link to my site doesn't work, due to blog updates.

Here is a working link:

Has anyone tried to do this under Snow Leopard? I'm having great difficulty compiling Aften, it generates a number of errors when I attempt to "make".

So, with the most recent builds of Aften (0.0.8), and cmake (2.8), I'm able to finally make this work under Snow Leopard. You can follow the script here: Install Script for MKV DTS to AC3 – Snow Leopard manually; it requires a little massaging to work correctly (some typos and missing commands.) Below are the commands I actually used, with my corrections applied:

mkdir /ConverterTemp

This installs CMake

cd /ConverterTemp/
curl -O http://www.cmake.org/files/v2.8/cmake-2.8.0.tar.gz

At this point, I just opened the /ConverterTemp folder & ungzipped/untarred the file using the built-in OS X Archive Helper.

cd cmake-2.8.0
./configure
make
sudo make install

This installs Aften

cd /ConverterTemp
curl -O http://iweb.dl.sourceforge.net/project/aften/aften/0.0.8/aften-0.0.8.tar.bz2

Same as above, use the Finder to decompress the aften file into the aften-0.0.8 folder

cd aften-0.0.8
mkdir default
cd default
cmake /ConverterTemp/aften-0.0.8/
make
sudo make install

This installs MKVInfo

cd /ConverterTemp
curl -O http://iamthekiller.net/downloads/mkvinfo.zip
unzip mkvinfo.zip
sudo chmod 755 mkvinfo
sudo cp mkvinfo /usr/local/bin

This installs libdca

cd /ConverterTemp
svn co svn://svn.videolan.org/libdca/trunk libdca
cd libdca
sudo ./bootstrap
sudo ./configure
sudo make
sudo make install

This installs MKVDTS2AC3

cd /ConverterTemp
curl -O http://iamthekiller.net/downloads/mkvdts2ac3.zip
unzip mkvdts2ac3.zip
cd mkvdts2ac3
sudo chmod 755 mkvdts2ac3.sh
cp /ConverterTemp/mkvdts2ac3/mkvdts2ac3.sh /ConverterTemp/mkvdts2ac3/mkvdts2ac3
sudo cp /ConverterTemp/mkvdts2ac3/mkvdts2ac3 /usr/local/bin/

This installs MKVMerge

cd /ConverterTemp
curl -O http://iamthekiller.net/downloads/mkvmerge
sudo chmod 755 mkvmerge
sudo cp mkvmerge /usr/local/bin/

This installs MKVExtract

cd /ConverterTemp
curl -O http://iamthekiller.net/downloads/mkvextract
sudo chmod 755 mkvextract
sudo cp mkvextract /usr/local/bin/

Jeff, your instructions are great and I've made it further than ever before, but now I'm stuck at the step where you unzip the mkvinfo.zip file from iamthekiller's site....I get an error from the command line that there are no boundaries in that mkvinfo.zip file or something. I tried just using the OSX archive utlity to unzip it, but it seems to include nested zips and all kinds of weirdness that I can't get to the bottom of....can you just post the mkvinfo.zip file in a non-corrupted fashion somewhere and we can get it?

thanks again, i'm close to having DTS conversion...finally, you have no idea how much hair i've lost here :-)

Here is the error I get whenever I try to unzip any of the zips from iamthekiller's site...what am I doing wrong?

unzip mkvdts2ac3.zip
Archive: mkvdts2ac3.zip
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
unzip: cannot find zipfile directory in one of mkvdts2ac3.zip or
mkvdts2ac3.zip.zip, and cannot find mkvdts2ac3.zip.ZIP, period.

latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
unzip: cannot find zipfile directory in one of mkvinfo.zip or

From my comment at: http://www.lprestonsegoiii.com/2009/09/install-script-for-mkv-dts-to-ac3-snow-leopard/

All the “curl -O http://iamthekiller.net/downloads/…” commands point to a site that delivers a redirect, which doesn’t have the files needed. I got them from here instead: http://jonthn.free.fr/MKVtoolnix/Mkvtoolnix-4.0.0_2010-06-21-dffa.dmg
Also, [the] actual .sh is unobtainable for the same reason but accessible from: http://github.com/JakeWharton/mkvdts2ac3
For cmake, use the url offered by Jeff Byrnes, above (http://www.cmake.org/cmake/resources/software.html).
The Aften and libdca parts work just fine.

Am finally all installed and running for the first time – if it goes tits up, I’ll be sure to let you know…
