A couple of weeks ago, something went wrong with my iPhoto database and I lost a lot of thumbnails. I held down the Option key when launching iPhoto, and selected all the rebuild options. Unfortunately it didn't recreate the thumbs for Faces.
I found a hint to delete the Faces database to force it to recreate. However, in my case I had tagged too many images to reset the database. I did find a way to recreate the images, though it is time consuming.
When I browsed the library in Faces, some of the thumbnails were there, others were missing. I selected the missing ones, Control-clicked and selected 'Detect Missing Faces' and it recreated the thumbnails. Unfortunately, you need to do this for each person in your Faces database, but it's the only way I could find to recreate the thumbnails.
