Prevent the iPhone from going to sleep while docked iOS devices
Sometimes you want to be able to dock your iPhone and not have the display go to sleep. For example, when you have a 3rd party app like AIM or Twitterrific open that doesn't have a disable lock function. The screen will not lock automatically if the iPhone is docked and music is playing. Simply start playing music and then dock the iPhone and open the app you want to use. The iPhone won't sleep until the playlist, album, or podcast is finished. If you don't want to listen to anything, you can always turn down the volume.

[Ed Note: You can also set the Auto-Lock setting to Never.]

iPhone OS 3.0:

SETTINGS >> GENERAL >> AUTO-LOCK >> NEVER

Open your eyes and look thru your system. It's there.

If you're using an Exchange account on the iPhone, most likely the "Never" option is not available to you - exchange policy settings get enforced on the device, and that's one of the first things that go...

Settings: General: Auto-Lock = Never

It's a setting under a stock 3.0 iPhone. If it's not there, you have been managed by a settingsprofil!

An alternative that lets you leave the volume up is a file that's mostly silent.

For example, start with a short sound and follow with several minutes of silence. Put the file into a playlist by itself and set it to repeat. Or, you could put one file with a short sound and another of silence into the playlist. Then you can easily revise the sound.

The sound will let you know it's running and the silence will let other sounds be heard.

There's a 10 minute file here. Because the sound has been saved specifically for the phone, 10 minutes takes all of 84 KB.
