Stream iTunes app podcasts in the background on iPhone iOS devices
I just discovered this today, though I'm not sure if it's a feature of iPhone OS 3.0 or if it's been there all along. As you know, you can stream a podcast episode rather than downloading it by double-tapping the episode within the iTunes app on the iPhone. The familiar QuickTime logo will appear and you can listen to the podcast instead of downloading it.

However, a nifty feature is that when you start streaming the episode, you can close iTunes and it will still play. I've been able to open other apps whilst the iTunes app is playing a podcast episode.

You certainly mean the iTunes STORE app, not the iTunes app?

The app by which you access the music store (and podcasts) is called iTunes. The one where you play music is called iPod.

Unless you have an iPod touch. Then the music app is called "Music".

You are right. But I still call the store app the store app, whatever Apple chooses to call it (iTunes store is simply too long as a label) since I consider calling it iTunes to be too ambiguous.

It has always been like that since they added Podcasts to the store.

I'm new to the world of iPhone: is there a way to get it to download rather than stream without syncing to one's home computer?

Yes. Tap on the button to the right that says "Free", which will then change to "Download" (I assume it's "Price" then "Purchase" if there's a charge for the podcast, but I can't find any that aren't free). As long as you've entered your iTunes account details, that's it.

"you can close iTunes and it will still play."
But the same is true for the iPod app (the orange one) itself, so the main advantage is not having to wait for the download.

There is another use of this, some podcasts for whatever reason do not show up in the mobile iTunes store app (short 'iTunes', the violet one) but are available on the producer's website. Streaming from there is possible in Safari.

Stream Safari in the background on iPhone

You can use Safari to stream internet radio in the background, too. Almost as good as having a built-in tuner. See http://www.intomobile.com/2009/06/16/iphone-os-30-can-stream-internet-radio-in-the-background.html for details.
