Read iPhone/iPod touch screen while lying down iOS devices
The iPhone (and iPod touch) automatically switch the screen between landscape and portrait mode when you tilt the device. This can be annoying if you want to read a web page or mail message when reclining in a horizontal posture on your side (while, say, lying in bed).

But you can 'lock' the iPhone/iPod touch in landscape mode by turning it upside down slowly. This is perfect for reading while lying down.

Hold the device in an upright position (default portrait mode). Tilt the device ninety degrees in either direction (switches to landscape mode). Tilt the device another ninety degrees in the same direction, so that it's now upside down. The screen orientation stays in landscape mode, and the text is now aligned for reading on your side in a horizontal position.

This is one of the three reasons I still jailbreak my phone, I install the 'rotation inhibitor' SBToggle. It is needed quit a bit more since 3.0 came out and every app is rotating now.

BTW, the other two are...
Status Notify - Let me know if I have new mail by putting an icon in the status bar, that way I don't have to unlock my phone to check. Just like every blackberry since the beginning.
Flashlight - About 100% brighter than the one that is in the app store (apple puts a limit on the allowed brightness).

Why is the solution to something people don't like about the iPhone always jailbreak? This was a dumb hint. I never have this problem.

Shorter version: When you lie down, turn your phone so you can read it.

The key part—and that part that is this hint—is to turn the device upside down. That's the only way it'll stick in landscape. Turning it the other way, to right-side-up, will put it back into portrait.

Yep, that's the key bit of the hint -- without the upside down part, the phone is likely to want to rotate again.

Unfortunately some developers try to be smarter than their users, and some apps override this. iEijiro (EN-JA dictionary), for one, will rotate even 180° if "necessary". Incredibly annoying.

How silly these complainers are. I was looking for just such a solution. It was driving me batty always rotating when I wanted it to stay. Now I know how.

Awesome hint. It's brief, elegant, not-entirely-obvious solutions like this that bring me back to this site.

Maybe not useful for everyone but I, for one, sometimes want to read in bed without waking the wife with the eerie, disembodied glow of an iPhone screen.

Shortened version: If you want to read in Safari.app or Mail.app while lying in bed (diagonal tilt), orient the device upside down relative to the ground. (It stays fixed in landscape mode because there is no upside down portrait mode in those apps.)

However, please note that this hint doesn't work in apps like the New York Times app because they do allow upside down portrait mode.

The nice thing is that some apps allow orientaion locking. Stanza (a free ebook reader) will allow you to lock display to portrait mode so that you can read in that mode while lying on your side.

Hopefully, as the OS and apps mature, this will be more widely available...
